By flashing it with new firmware.

Yes, it's that old.

It's branded HP 7570i. It's actually made by Sony (I took it apart to make sure).

Tonight I flashed it with Sony Firmware 1.0n for the Sony CRX 100e, and it worked!

Now my drive is a whopping 2x faster!

It's now a 4x2x24 drive. No buffer under run protection. And with the new firmware it should be able to write a whole 80 minutes, instead of the 78 that the HP firmware had it limited to.

You won't be getting that kind of upgrade for free anytime soon.

It's actually my 1st ever burner. That is now in my 4 year old son's system. I sold it back about 2000. And it wound up coming back to me after all those years. So I built the kids a system and put it in for the heck of it.

I'd remembered reading that it could be flashed, but chickened out the last time I was set to try it.

My new SOHR-5238S should be here by Tuesday. It's replacing my LTR-52246S that my 19 month old daughter destroyed last week by twisting the tray...beware Ian & Ddecahedron & Ken. Kids are rough with everything, including your computer...

I have one. Chieftec Case.

I had just finished burning a CD and left it (case door) open for about 5 minutes while I went upstairs for a beverage...its all the time it took. I had more discs to burn, so I never thought much about it.

My "office" at home has a child gate for reasons like this --in my case, a 2 year old cat instead of a 19 month-old child. You never know what they'll do.

I wouldn't be surprised if the furry beast found a leftover case screw or two lying on the floor and ate them out of curiosity.

P.S. And I thought my oldest writer was old (Yamaha 4x4x16 SCSI).
