Plextor Japan has officially unveiled the PlexWriter Premium2:

http://plextor.jp/product/premium2/index.php

It seems to support many of the same functions as the PX-760 as well as Yamaha's AudioMASTER technology. I must admit that I was a little surprised by this. Some of the drive's specs:

Writing Speeds: 52x, 48x (CAV), 40x, 32x (P-CAV), 20x, 16x, 8x, 4x, 2x (CLV)
ReWriting Speeds: 32x, 24x (P-CAV), 10x, 4x (CLV)
Read Speeds: 50x, 40x, 32x, 24x (CAV), 8x, 4x (CLV)
Supported Formats: CD-DA、 CD-Extra、 CD-ROM Mode-1、 Mix CD、 CD-ROM XA、 Photo-CD、 Video-CD、 CD-I Multi session、 CD TEXT、 UDF
Recording Modes: Track at Once, Disc at Once, Session at Once, Packet Writing, Multi-Session, CD-MRW
Average Access Time: 65ms
Buffer: 8MB

If you were expecting this to be a cheaper version of the Premium, think again. It's going for 19,800 Yen ($168US) in Japan. That's more than many of Plextor's DVD writers!

Wow, haven't seen any CD-RW drives in awhile.

For the money, it better be one hell of a writer...

Interesting... seems pretty close to the original Premium, with a few tweaks. But $168!?!? Did the original Premium ever cost that much?

Looks like the Plextor "SCSI" price-premium has moved to a "CDRW Premium".

I'm not ruling out buying one, though. 8)

I know a few dozen of people who will buy these in an instant. Esp. if the cd scanning is up to notch.

DVD drives are not very reliable for CD/CD-R scanning.

And yes, the price _is_ high, but if it's a good tool, it'll have it's limited audience :)

halcyon

too bad they don't put enough effort into combining DVD and CD burners. what i mean is a DVD burner that is as good at CD burning as the best CD burners (like the Premium2 for example). inluding all the goodies etc.
if they had a DVD burner like that, that would be a real incentive to buy it.

Their insane! With the few amount of CD's that I burn today, I just use my PX-716A for it, which for my uses, is da** good enough!

I wouldn't spend ~$175 on a DVD burner, let alone a CD Burner!
