Using windows explorer I copy an entire folder including subfolders to a cd-rw disc. All the files copied to the disc are marked read only but the files copied from are not read only.

This seems to be an intermittent problem because I have CD-RWs that have been written without having the read only attribute on the cd.

The drive is listed in Device Manager as: HL-DT-ST rw/dvd GCC-4482B

The copy was done by administrator.

Any explanation for this occurence?

what you are doing is packet-writing.
what software are you using to do this ?
maybe there's some setting you can check to control this behavior.

why don't you simply use Windows Explorer to change the file/folders' properties and uncheck the Read Only attribute ?

I am using windows explorer copy function. Not sure what program is in the background. If you can tell me how to find out I will look.
I Have tried removing the read only attribute from the cd-rw but its not allowed.
Even selecting format from the right click menu would come up with the error that is read only and can not be formated.
I did get the cd formated using a right click on the icon for the drive in the my computer window and selecting format.

if you are using some software packet-writing such as InCd, Drag-To-Disc, maybe someone would know if it can be fixed or there's some setting.
if you are indeed using Window's built-in burning capability (bad bad IMO) i don't know anything about it.

AFAIK when you burn (with an app like Nero, not when you packet-write) to CD-R or DVD-R the files become read only.
just tested with a DVD+RW had lying about, same thing.
CD-RW same thing most likely.
i don't know about packet writing if the same happens nor Window's burning capability.

re Window's burning capability - i don't think that's packet writing. i think it buffers the data and at some point burns it (just like a burning app such as Nero). so it would be just like i said - the files become Read Only and you can't change that with right-click -> properties.

my guess is that when using packet-writing the files don't become Read Only (that would be silly for packet writing), so it appears that's not what your'e doing.

what's the big deal about having the files marked Read Only ?

With the files marked read only, i was not able to copy a file back to the hard disk. I know that sounds strange but i would get the message file is read only. Heck thats what i was trying to do READ it.

well then your issue is not the Read Only attribute but the lack of success reading the file back. different issue altoghether.

what media CD-RW are you using?

not trying to make you sound stupid, but are you sure you were trying to read it ?

very sure, been doing things on PCs since the old PC XT. only been fooling with cd-rw for several months tho.
