hi gang

when i play cds on my cdrom the sound is terrable and it skips.this just
started happening recently.it doesnt seem to be about to read the cd very well-it used to not now though.any ideas??

just want to give more info-when im coping cds it will gather whats on
the master cd for copying later.but when i try to just play the master
cd itll skip and the speed is a little off.

Can you provide more information on your set-up? What drive you are using,
more than one drive in the system, etc. Also, what software you are using with the drive. Drives do go bad after a while, often suddenly, how old is the drive? The same cd works o.k. in other drives?
I'm not sure I understand your second post. Are you saying that when you rip a cd with the drive it rips the music to your computer o.k., but that when you try to play the same cd you get skipping and distortion? If so, that sounds to me as if it might be a software problem. Have you recently installed any new programs to your system that are music related? Also, have you made any hardware changes?

well the drive a couple of years old.i just got this computer.a dell demension 1100.when i use the drive in question it is able to write
the music into the computer so i can make a copy of it.i made a copy
of a cd using this drive.it made a cd but the result was questionable.
it had scratches(the cd was scratchless).the sound on the finished cd
strange sounding.alot of distortion.i thought it might be the source but
the cassette tape i was copying from was very good.i have two drives
in my new computer.the one that cane with the computer is the mast-
er cd burner.the cd burner in question is the slave.its a mad dog brand.

More questions. Did the disc you made on the slave burner sound the
same when you played it back on both the master and slave drives?
If you make a cd on the master drive does it sound o.k? Can you switch the
drives so that the problem drive is the master and the drive that came with
the computer is the slave and see if you are able to get good burns then?
What kind of blank cds are you using? Some brand s don't like some burners, so if you just started using a new brand with the slave burner you
may get worse results that you did with the old brand.
How are you copying the tape to cd? Are you copying it to the hard drive first or trying to do it on the fly? If you are copying it to the hard drive first, does it sound o.k. when you play it back from the hard drive? The software you are using could be introducing the distortion you're hearing.
If both burners give bad results it sounds like a software problem, but if they give different results it sounds like hardware. Anybody else out there have any ideas?
