A few questions for the experienced here (32x to 40x o/c) ...
Original, retail box drive is made in Korea, so here :

1) Did anyone o/c the CHINESE made oem drive ?
2) Does that (oem) drive also have 8 MB buffer ?
3) Does the rw-speed actually increase to 12x ?

I did o/c this drive. It is made in China and it does have an 8mg buffer. I have not tried the rw yet.

Thanks, I'll go to B.Buy today, they only got a couple in stock. Thought that it was made in Korea, last time I checked inside the box/the drive sticker ..? :-?

You got me thinkin' now. I'll have to open up my computer and check the sticker on the drive. I just assumed the drive was made in Korea even though the box says made in China.

Well, it's really not a big deal - even Plexys sold here are made in China (used to be Japan). Just wandering, at what point of time LG had switched 32x & 40x drives from 8 to 2 MB buffer size. And it is likely that the earlier models (korean made) have larger buffer

Thank you Ken (DaMan) 8) and other pple here, that encouraged me to do this !!
Still got my 8mb buffer & a nice new, P-CAV 40x write/12x r-w enabled :D

Let us know how it goes.

I remember reading that the drive got quite particular about which media it would use and at which speeds.

In my case I have had no issues like that at all. Now I haven't tried to many different kinds of media but as far as I can tell firmware 1.02 has addressed that issue.

I know eliminator is using the same firmware so perhaps he could share some of his experiences with us. I will be surprised if there is an issue regarding being picky on media.

Will do.
One thing I noticed is the 24x Fuji shows as 40x in Nero Info Tools, but test writes it @ 32x ...

I have an OC'd 32X LG and yes it writes @40X, but while doing on the fly copying with the latest version of Nero and using the ShowRecordingSpeed hack, it shows that copying of the fly is only 32X at best. My CD ROM is an Asus 52X. DMA is enabled on both.

I tried Fuji 40X media (relabeled 24X).

Just thought you'd like to know.

I think it might be the media you are using. Are you sure that those Fuji CD-R's can burn at 40x

Just out of curiosity I will try this later myself and post my results. Can you tell me what you where burning on the fly at the time. I see if I have it and try to do duplicate your burn, I also have a Asus 52x CD ROM

Ken,

You are right about the media. First, the copy I was making was a very small (1.7mg) disc. Bothe Fuji and Imation only got to 32X. BTW, the Fuji will do 40X. To prove that, I copied (on the fly) a 650 mg disc and got 40X (3:03) with Fuji and only 16X with Imation. The Imations are older 24X rated. The Fujis had 40X on the label, but it was a sticker.

I'm no expert, but I can only surmize that the size of the source disc has something to do with it (I'm guessing PCAV, CAV etc) as well as the media itself.

Regardless, for $60, I'm happy with the OC'd LG 32X and will continue to use it until something better comes along.

Overclocked my LG GCE-8320B to GCE-8400B (Using IBM's Firmware) to Enable UDMA 33 & MT-Rainer Support.

In Brief, the steps on how i went about it below
(From Info gathered from the Forum @ CDFreaks.com)

LG, GCE HL-DT-ST 8320B > GCE HL-DT-ST 8400B UDMA33-MT-Rainer Support

Original:
(Retail version: Make in China: Purchased in New Zealand -Asia-Pacific)
GCE HL-DT-ST 8320B
32x 10x 40x
2MB Buffer
LG FW: 1.04
PIO Mode 4- Multi Word DMA - No MT-Rainer Support

Flashed to:
GCE HL-DT-ST 8400B
40x 12x 40x
2MB Buffer
LG FW: 1.04
PIO Mode 4 - Multi Word DMA - No MT-Rainer Support

Flashed to: with the "IBM FW: 1.12" Result Below:
GCE HL-DT-ST 8400B
40x 12x 40x
2MB Buffer
IBM FW: 1.12
UDMA 33 - MT-Rainer Support

Pro's:
- UDMA33
- Z-CAV --> P-CAV
- Mount Rainier support
Con:
- Read LED not work (when reading, write LED working instead)

Worked Fine for me.
