I just got my new pc (p4 2.0GHZ, 40bg hd, 512mb ram) and my lg burner does not burn nearly at 40x. it takes sometime like 5 to 8 min to burn a cd. im using 32x cds, they all work, but take to long to be made. How can i speed the burner up? I have checked the lg canada site but theres nothing execpt specs for my burner.

What model # is your LG drive? Maybe try a firmware update if there is one for your drive.

i thought the model was the lg 8400B model, its the 40x12x40x
where can i find these firmware updates?

Well, you can try different media, check the 1.03 fware too...

What firmware is the drive currently?

The problem could be this,
is DMA enabled for the hard drive you are reading from ?

I have 2x LG8400 Burners and this happened to me a couple of days ago.
Always wrote 700 MB in 3:05 and then suddenly took 6 minutes. Write buffer kept on fluctuating between 2 & 90%, I benchmarked my Hard drive with Sandra Professional and where it was usually benched 27,700 it was now doing 3,025 !!!. For some unknown reason XP knocked it down to PIO4 (From UDMA5)

What O/S ?
Make sure DMA is enabled for your LG drive as well.

Just a suggestion, because I had some trouble with my IDE channels after installing SP1 for Windows XP, check your DMA settings. If one of your drives is in PIO mode then the other one is restricted to the same mode due to the way IDE rules work. If this is the case, Uninstall the IDE chain that has the offending drive ( Unless it is the one with your hard drive ) and rescan for hardware, this should allow anything that is DMA capable to go to DMA mode.

Made some data disc's and all of a sudden it takes 6 minutes to burn 700 mb. (usally 3min 5 sec.) I notice the buffer in Nero fluctuating between 5 % & 98% all the time and could hear & see the writer slowing down. Same in Roxio. Switch over to ME (dualboot system) and everything is fine. Back to XP & run Sandra Professional 2002 on the HDD (Seagate ata100 20 gig 7200) benchmark usually 27,700 now 3,025 !!!
Device manager, it's running in PIO4 mode ! was fine the previous day & I cannot change it. Uninstall the driver, reboot, XP redetects and installs it in UDMA5.

Start, settings, control panel, system, hardware, device manager,
click on IDE/ATA controllers
Primary IDE channel or secondary IDE channel
Advanced settings ---> current mode ?

i must be having a bad week already, but i downloaded the firmware update and cannot figure out how to apply it, please any help in this for win 2000.

Use winzip to open the zip file. Extract the files into a new folder. Then double click on the exe file and just follow the on-screen directions from there. I think that's all there is to it. If you still need help, make an additonal post.

I use Win2000 professional, PIV 18.Ghz, 512 DDR RAm and I didn´t make any changes except ASPI 4.60 to 4.71 because this is frustrating

The only thing that could be wrong is the media but i don´t know what to do

prabably cause its a LiteOn drive

The problem was only a bad or low quality media.
TraxData x48 CD-R really suck, because I could only wrote at 20X

I did many other tests on other media and had success at 32X and 40X with:
Acer Gold/AC 80min 24X..................40X
Acer Gold/AC 80min 40X..................40X
HP/TY 80min 24X.........................40X
Princo/PC 80min 48X.....................32X
