OK, I've got a Lite On 48x12x48x CD-RW (48125W), with Nero 5.5.9.17.
For the write method Nero shows three things: Track At Once, Disc At Once,
and Disc At Once/96.

What the heck is Disc At Once/96??

And is anyone else having problems with the Fuji Film 48x CD-Rs? The burn speed on my drive always drops off right at the end of the disc, and CDSpeed's scandisk is showing quite a few damaged blocks near the end of the disc. This didn't happen with the Fuji 40x discs, although CDSpeed always shows the last block as unreadable. But someone here said that at least was just a software glitch...boy, this got off topic quick

Disk At Once/96 is 2352 bytes RAW Data + 96 Bytes P-W Subchannel Data. In short, RAW Mode. Are you using firmware VS08?

Yup, VS08...Plus SmartBURN.EXE has decieded not to work now
Click the button, the program just closes. I did just pull my Promise Ultra100 card out; going to try burning a disc again and hope it comes out perfect. I thought the Fuji/TY 48x discs were some of the best around...

You heard correctly, TYs are some of the best. Are you using the latest ASPI drivers from Adaptec? If not, here is a link: http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_v472a2.exe

Installation Instruction:
This file extracts by default to the c:\adaptec\ directory. If you have changed this directory, please note the directory you have chosen. For Windows 98, NT 4.0, Me and 2000, use the enclosed ASPIINST.EXE file to install the ASPI layer. For Windows XP, select Start - Run from the menu, and then the Browse button. Locate the INSTALL.BAT file in the directory the files extracted to and select the OPEN button. In the command box, add a space and either XP32 for Pentium I/II/III/IV processors or XP64 for Itanium processors. The command should look like: c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32 or c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP64. Then select the OK button to run the XP installer.

Just tried a Fuji 48x disc at 40x; disc came out perfect, even the last block.
I'll try again with the ASPI update....

Same thing; speed drops big time around 90% done at 48x. Plus, the new ASPI layer killed my RAID array- I had to disable the RAID controller to get Win2K to even boot

Now, how does one remove the ASPI layer and revert back to the old one?

Hmm...SmartBurn.exe flashes a bunch of error dialog boxes and then closes before I can read 'em - looks like Access error??
If I try it a 2nd time, it reboots my system. This is why I hate computers...

Edit: SmartBurn's error is an Access Violation.

Well, THAT was fun. Uninstalled the IAA, reinstalled the mobo's chipset drivers, rebooted 52 dozen times, re-enabled the RAID, reinstalled the RAID drivers, reboot a few more times...and: Everything works. Even SmartBurn.
So I can't burn at 48x w/o errors: oh well, I can at 40x. Good enought I guess, but kind of frustrating, ya know?

IAA is a must apparently; with out it it slowed way down at 30% and took over 6 minutes to finish (at 48x!). Still got that slow-down/errors at the end of the disc with it, though. Guess I need the 52x drive to burn at 48x.

It looks as though TY needs to work on their quality-control. Glad to be of service!

Yeah, but unlike the 40x discs I have these do burn perfectly at 40x. Then again, the "problem" with the 40x is most likely just a bug in CDSpeed (I hope!). This is the 4th brand of 48x disc I've tried; none of them can burn at 48x error free. These are the ONLY ones that cause the drive to drop to a lower speed, though. For the record, PNY's 48x discs don't burn error free at 24x, so TY's are still the best I've tried so far!

Buy some Memorexes (any speed including 8X!) and burn them at 48X with smart-burn disabled. You shouldn't get any errors on the disc.

Ok, That DOES NOT work with the Fuji 48x, even thought according to SmartBurn.exe they are identical discs. Nero: Burn process FAILED. Guess I'm buying Memorex media now!

Wierd huh? Maybe they are made in different factories with different quality standards.

Finally, yes. Memorex 40x rated with SmartBurn disabled worked. It's the only thing that has worked at 48x, though.

I have tried:
Fuji 24x/40x - Some damaged areas, but still readable
Fuji 48x - Massive speed drop off about 94% through, damaged areas
Memorex 40x/48x - Same as Fuji 24x - unless smartburn is disabled.
PNY 48x - Worst of the lot

As per sonyman's suggestion, turning off smartburn and using Memorex discs worked perfectly! So, I'm happy!

I have a Lite On 48x12x48x it was sold to me by Visiontek (before going bankrupt) and I do not think it has ever successfully burned a cd at 48X. 40x it works great. Lite On is GARBAGE as far as I am concerned. Just turned off smartburn and I burned full CD at 48x THANKS sonyman!

If you are using the Memorex discs, I'd run CDSpeed and to the CD Quality Check.

The ones I've burned like that pass the surface scan perfectly (100% green), but the Quality Check shows LOTS of errors (nothing unreadable, though), which cause the drive to slow down a lot

The Fuji 48x discs seem ok, but still a) slow down durning burn and b) produce lots of questionable areas on the disc.
