LG 8480B V1.03 Firmware With Mount Rainer Support

Hi Guys,
I just created a firmware page for the LG8480B CD-RW Burner. If anyone is interested I have copied the firmware from my drive and have uploaded it to this page for download. My dirve also supports the Mount Rainer function as well as it was purchased in Australia. Not to sure if this will work with the US drives that do not have Mount Rainer. But I cannot see why it would not for as from what I have read it is only a firmware related issue. Anyway hope this helps someone out. Also if you have any other firmware for this drive or other LG CD-RW drives let me know as I will be more than happy to post the firmware on the site so other people can download it :).

Regards
Erica

And where is this page?

PS I also have this drive bought in France, but my idea is to flash it with the fw of 48/24/48 LG drive 8481B, which is basically the same as far as I know.
What flasher do you use to flash LG's? Mktflash, I guess, allows only to save the original fw with LG drives.
By the way, does somebody has LG 8481B with Mt. Rainer fw to post?

I had problems flashing the drive with MTKFlash 1.48. It would not erase the flashrom on my drive. I don't have the drive anymore, but 1.55 might work. I dunno.

HI Guys,
Sorry about not posting the URL as I was in a hurry last night and I forgot to add it silly me :).. Anyway here is the URL to my page for the firmware. You can also download MTKFLASH v1.55 from there as well.

http://www.cybagirl.net/lg/cdrw/firmware/index.html

I know this fellow that used this version of MTKFLASH v1.55 and has an LG 8480B Burner. But before he flashed his drive he had V1.02 firmware and then then he used my V1.03 and it worked and he is very happy with it. This is what he had to say.

Hi,

Well, I succeeded flashing my GCE-8480B to firmware 1.03... and did some tests. Basically it behaves *exactly the same* as 1.02 with my collection of 20 different blank CDR brands, except for one : The samsung digitall 32x CDRs, which were written at CAV 48x with firmware 1.02 and now are written at PCAV 40x (fw 1.03). I suppose it's because this brand/make has been added to the 'database' of CDRs the firmware knows. Since this firmware *probably* could have also other fixes, I'll live with it (i.e not going back to 1.02).

I flashed the drive with MKTFLASH 1.55, command line :

mktflash 3 W /B /M 8480B103.BIN (3 because my cdrw is secondary master)

Note that having succeeded in this test (contrary to reports of mktflash not being able to flash this drives) opens two doors :

1) It is mostly important for USA people, because their 8480Bs are flashed with 1.10 fw, a special version *without* mount Rainier support.

2) Whenever we locate a GCE-8481B firmware, we now know how to try to flash ours and make this 48-16-48 become a 48-24-48 writer!!

... Anyone has a GCE-8481B and volunteers to get the firmware for us ? ........................

Thanks again for all CybaGirl.

Regards
FTC

Anyway hope this helps some people out!

Regards
Erica

What's wrong with your site CybaGirl, it's 404 compliant.
BTW, TomR should have sent you 8481B firmware to post, when can we expect it to appear?

Flashing LG 8451b to Mt Rainier

I know this chat is a little dated, but I just bought a brand spanking new LG 8451b, but I live in Canada so it's not Mt Rainier (acc to Nero infotool). I'm not terribly with it so I'm not sure I know exactly how to go about flashing my drive to the more useful firmware version (or how to get back -- there are some horror stories in some forums). I'm also not sure if anyone still needs a copy of the v.1.10 but I'm happy to oblige if so.

Any help?

Thanks much,
k

Kooij,

Try this firmware:

http://www.lge.co.kr/open_data/GCE-8481B103(KW).zip

I don't know how the update program will react since you have version 1.10, but it might be worth trying to flash your drive with 1.03. It will also add 48x CD-R read speeds.

Thanks for the rapid reply, and for the excellent reviews (by far the best pre-purchase that I could find).

And thanks for the link, but it appears to be 404 compliant. Do you have a copy you can send me directly?

Thanks,
k

Cut and past the whole link, not just the hyperlinked portion. Oh, never mind, just click this:

And by the way, please don't double-post.

it works, it's just that Ian's link does not include the (KW).zip, you have to type it in manually.
try again.
downloading it as i type

Thanks, I tried it -- complete freeze of the system, no mouse movement or anything. I also tried to back up the firmware using MTKFLASH 3 R /M /B filename.bin but that froze inside the command prompt window. I'm assuming that I'm missing something.

Oh, it's an LG 8481b of course (typo earlier).

MTKFLASH needs to be run from true DOS... not a command prompt window.

No success with the .exe files or with MTKFLASH. I can read the version 1.10, but I can't flash a new copy with either 1.02, 1.03, or the 8520b .bin file. The exe files just freeze for 15 minutes before I give up, the MTKFLASH says it can't erase the old bin file. (MTKFLASH 3 W /B filename.bin). Has anyone else had similar probs with the 8481b?

Thanks,
kooij

Can't erase the flashrom?

I had that problem with the 8480B and MTKFLASH 1.48. Try 1.55 or the Windows version.

It was version 1.55 that failed. Where can I find the windows version? (searches so far have yeilded nada)

Try version 1.48. It worked for my LiteOn 48246S (1.55 didn't). You can get it at Dave's site. Information re. windows version is (e.g.) here.

SUCCESS! I finally got it to work thanks to some help. The problem was my syntax. I was using "MTKFLASH 3 W /B FILENAME.BIN" when what I needed to use was "MTKFLASH 3 W /M /B FILENAME.BIN" contrary to the instructions in the .txt file with MTKFLASH.

Thanks for all the help.
