I recently switched from an Lg 16x to a 52x Lite On and noticed the tray as well. It's much slower opening than the LG, but I believe that's by design.

Guys, pardon my ignorance on the LG CDRW drives, what kind of tray mechanism does LG uses? gears or belt?
From my LiteOn collection, it uses gears.

I'm not sure. I guess I'll never know now that I've sold it to buy the Lite On.
But it was about 2x faster opening than the Lite On.

Spazmogen - Thanks for taking the time to reply. I don't own a LG CDRW, hence my curiousity.
A LiteOn drive with a gear driven mechanism takes between 1.49 sec and 1.64 sec for each tray open and tray close operation (At least reported by Ahead CD Info) between my LiteOn 48x12x48 and 48x24x24 drives. The Yamaha 3200 series tray mechanism were gear driven also.

A gear/belt mechanism shouldn't make any difference to speed, in fact in my experience the speed is generally controlled by firmware (try flashing an Aopen with Artec firmware or vice-versa and you'll see what I mean). TEAC burners tend to have very fast eject mechanisms but they are also gear-driven. Gears tend to be noisier than belts, something I find intensely annoying with LiteOn writers (that nasty screeching noise that older LiteOn drives and DVD-ROMs tend to make, eurgh!).
Still wouldn't worry about it though. It might sound cheap but generally LiteOn kit seems to be lasting quite well, despite what LOS says....

Gear driven trays are generally slower and noisier but will usually hold up longer than belt driven models.
