I've been researching many sites and i've narrowed down my choice to 3 drives

can anyone give me some opinions and which one i should get

1) TDK veloCD 48/24/48 CD-RW (is this drive also the same as this http://www.computerprices.co.uk/hardwar ... tid=269709)

2) Sony CRX210A1 48/12/48 CD-RW

3) Yamaha CRW-F1 44/24/44 CD-RW

Btw can the speed of these drives be increased with firmware updates?

I'm so far going towards the TDK veloCD drive as it has been recommended by many sites..... so specifically can the speed be increased by firmware updates?

Btw what is Mt Rainer and is it important?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

The TDK and the Sony are rebadged(spelling?) Lite-On Drive so i would go with the (real) Lite-On ltr-48246 if i were you ! it can be overclocked to 52x ..... the mount rainier format is just a faster way to put data on a cdrw ( its used like a floppy ......

Of the burners on the list you gave, I would be leaning towards the TDK. In fact I originally wanted that drive.

The F1 is also a tempting choice not b/c of the Disc T@2, but b/c of it's audio burning method to ensure compatiblility with a wider variety of CD players.

i agree with black cobra get a orginal lite-on, i recommend the 48x (the one i have in my specs), get it from newegg.com

if your thinking about either any plextor, or yamaha, don't

you don't gain anything for spending more for non-liteon burners

plus lite-on's burn everything, including all new copy protection schemes

don't believe, just read the reviews of the lite-on, plextor, yamaha

you can o/c the tdk with the binary firmware of the lite-on .... or directly with the binary file of the tdk 52x if you can get one (if it exist ? i dont know if tdk have a 52x burner )

TDK have a 52x24x48X. It is probably a LiteOn too, but I don't know if its firmware is out yet or not.
My suggestion go for LiteOn 52x, its quite cheap, very fast, good writing quality and an original LiteOn so no firmware flashing required .

Thx for all the feedback people, I have now decided to get a LiteOn 52/24/52 CD-RW but can anyone tell me what is included with the package? Such as software and whether u get any blank CD-Rs etc?

with my 48x i got 1 12x cd-rw, 1 48x cd-r, audio cable, no manual, drive

My 52x LiteON came with:

-Nero & InCD with Mt. Rainier support software
-1 piece of LiteON branded 24x 650mb CDRW
-1 piece of LiteON branded 52x 700mb CDR

This is for the Canadian Retail package.

hrmmm no manual whatsoever? not even one of a cd? Cos i've never installed a CD-RW before...........

well im sure you can find a installation step by step online, its probably the simplist thing to install on a computer

I purchased the drive from newegg.com; both the OEM and retail boxes come with a 1 year warranty.

The OEM drive comes with registered NERO, audio cable, drive and a fold-out, one page installation manual.

The retail box adds (allegedly) 2 blank CD-R or CD-RWs.

Given that this hardware is directly controlled by software, a manual isn't necessary - what's it really going to tell you?

I went with the OEM - I get my media cheaper than the (nominal) price increase.
