What is your opinion about this drive? I know that the 40x previous model was a very average drive...but this new one supports udma33 for instance....any reviews available?Any opinion form somebody who purchased it? Any review from this site? I found it for 50 euro(including VAT). Does it support Mt Rainier?

yes i have found that already but i am looking for a review...will the site review this recorder in the future?

We're trying to get one. If I have to, I'll buy one from Best Buy next time they're on sale.

Not bad for an 8meg buffer. Anyone seen their DLP TV (I have last yrs 40" LCD model). These guys are really cranking out the goods of late.

I have a SW-248B, and I like it thus far. I've upgraded the firmware to the latest version (R501). The firmware upgrade improves the media compatibility. It can write at 48x to the Verbatim DataLife Plus 48x, the FujiFilm 48x, and the Imation 48x CD-Rs.

I can tell you that (1) it is a lot quieter than my TDK VeloCD 48x24x48 and that (2) this burner can read and write to 99-minute CD-Rs.

Unfortunately, it does not support Mt. Rainier (EasyWrite) at the moment. Then again, which 48x16x48 burner with an Oak Technology chipset (e.g., MSI, Optorite, Cyberdrive, CIS Arrgo) does?

I picked up the SW-232 for about $38 straight, but will probably return it because it lacks UDMA33 support and I have to chain it with a (UDMA) harddrive. I may pick up that newer Samsung in its place.

I also may go back to my original non USB 2.0 ASUS MB, saving on DDR Ram and adding more IDE drive channels (I was a little upset the new board wouldn't take my existing 256K PC133, and I don't play games). If so, I'll have a TDK 40x12x48 USB 2.0 drive orphaned and up for grabs :)

Reg-da-Ripper can you tell me the real world difference between a drive that supports mt rainier and one that doesn't?i mean how exactly do you experience that?i have a phillips 40x12x48 at the moment but i can still drag and drop files on a cd-rw through windows xp....
but it doesn't support mt..

Let's see...a real-world difference between a drive that supports Mt. Rainier and one with no Mt. Rainier support...none in my experience only because I don't use a lot of CD-RWs.

If there is anyone else who extensively uses CD-RWs and would like to chime in on the Mt. Rainier versus no Mt. Rainier comparison, please feel free to do so.

It's a type-o. The original poster meant a Samsung 48x16x48 drive.

thanks Ian...this is a very popular drive and Samsung is a leader company in technology although their drives are supposed to be average.Lets see whether this one will make a break through or it will remain "one more cd writer"

Hey Ian...why dont you see if your Samsung "contact" can ship you a 50" HLM507W DLP TV along with the drive. Their last attempt at next-gen (fLCD) went vaporware, but their new DLP system is hot. I want one of those :)

This is one drive I wish I hadn't bought. I got it to go into a PII 400 win98 machine but it would never work right in the there even after a tough search to find updated firmware. I put the drive into an old P 133 win98 machine (one it shouldn't have worked in) and then it seemed to be OK. Recently I got another system, a PIII 933 XP Pro machine and tried the drive in there and have the same problems I had to begin with. In the old days this would have been a challenge but these days I just want to get components that will work.
