TDK's 52x24x48 drive is made by Lite-On. They just stated a lower speed for the CD-Rom read speed, but I'm pretty sure it will read ta 52x like all other Lite-On 52x24x52 drives.

TDK's 48x24x48 is made by Lite-On too. The box says 16x re-write, but it can be upgraded to 24x re-write with firmware. This is the drive I use. :D

I've noticed quite a few people have multiple CD-RW drives listed in their system list signatures. Why is this? Can these people make more than one copy of CDs at the same time. What else could be the advantage to this set up?

Sorry for being off-topic :-?

liteoncrasher well i am guessing if both cd-rw drives have burn proof and you have two ide HDs or a SCSI HD you can burn two cds at once pretty easily. Not sure how it would do on one ide HD trying to burn two cds from data off the one IDE HD. Heck you could have 4 cd-rw drives which would rock with all burn proof and burn four cds at once! Oh yeah!!!!
I guess it would just be best to have either 4 ide HDs to do that all at the same time or one SCSI HD. Heck you could even do 10 cds at once i bet if you had 10 cd-rw drives just have to have a enough drive bays or get external cd-rw drives.

I suspect a lot of it is simply due to upgrading to the latest and greatest. Someone has a CD-RW that they are happily using, and then finds a newer, better one at an irresistible price (there have been a lot of those lately) and succumbs to temptation. Then, since the older drive still works fine or has some particular feature the new drive doesn't, the happy new CD-RW owner keeps both.

That is how I ended up with a Yamaha CRW3200EZ (excellent quality, special AMQ music recording feature) and a Memorex/LiteOn 48x24x48 (high speed, only $40).

cfitz have you ever tried burning 2 cds at once? I can't because my old HP 9110i 8x 4x 32x cd-rw doesn't have burn proof :( Thats one of the biggest reasons why i wanted to get a new cd-rw drive because i wanted burn proof so bad so i could use my computer while burning a cd!! So thats why i brought my plextor 24x 10x 40x cd-rw and i really have no reason to upgrade from that now inless it dies or whatever. I am just happy i have burn proof i just wish my other cd-rw did too.

cfitz ok. I wish i could try that. If i could i would because i know it would work i bet. Even with one ide HD but i think it would sorta take double the amount of time sense the ide HD could only do one at a time i think. Inless you have 2 ide HDs on two different ide channels. Or a SCSI HD.

You should be able to do it, even without buffer underrun protection on the one drive, as long as you burn slowly enough. And no, it won't take twice as long. In fact, it should take about the same amount of time as burning a single disc at the selected speed. The reason for this is that CD-RW transfer rates (assuming DMA is enabled) don't stress an IDE channel, so two drives could easily share the bandwidth without appreciably slowing down each other.

By the way, I am talking about burning the same image to two different CD-R discs simultaneously, not burning two separate images, one to each of two different CD-R discs.

Multiple drives...

There's two programs that let you burn multiple drives at once....one is Nero (2 w/ retail version--plus it's red-headed stepchild Feurio can on the pay version)...and the better way to do it is Cd Mate. Check Ian's review of both of these...CD Mate is recommended if you want up to 6 (!) drives going at once (like my DJ friend).

Ok i just had to try this so i downloaded the trial of cd mate and gave it a shot and i burned to copies of a full iso in 4.25 mins. I used two samsung CD-Rs one is a sw-240 the other is a sw-248 either will burn a fill disk in 2 mins by its self so it does look like doing two at once does slow it down some. Im thinking that is do to the fact that thay where on the same ide chn. im gona try in a little bit to see if it makes a diff to put them on a diff chn. then im also gona try doing to diff cds at once and see what i can come up with.

Tall Texan cool. I certainly wish i could test out two cd-rw drives burning at once but my first one doesn't have burn proof. :( Oh well. I just love testing things. Heck i wish i could test 4 or 6 + different cd-rw drives all writing at the same time! That would be cool!

i think my next test is gona be to add an old hp 9100series 8x4x32 i have on a shelf to it and see if i can do three i know the hp does not have burn proof so i will let you know how it goes

Cool Tall Texan i have a old hp 9100 series 8x4x32 too. Its a HP 9110i 8x 4x 32x but i bought a plextor 24x 12x 40x a while back. I never tried burning two cds at once sense i know my HP 9110i 8x 4x 32x cd-rw will have a buffer underrun error if i try i bet. Then again i may beable to do 2 cd-rw cds! Not sure if cd-rw cds can get buffer underuns. Hmm.

About the TDK 52x24x48 being a Lite-On, I'm not too sure if it is. Because on the box, it specifically says "Buffer Under Run Protection", and if I'm not mistaken, isnt that a Sanyo chipset???
Liteon uses Smart Burn.

The TDK 52x24x48 (5200B) is a Lite-ON. I am 100% sure. Buffer Underrun Protection is the generic name for any type of Buffer Underrun Prevention technology.

the Sanyo buffer underrun protection technology is called BURN-Proof.

Actually I saw this drive (52x24x48) with "BurnProof" on the box.

Also, with the recent article about TDK's 2nd edition drive, it also sports "BurnProof". This new drive is definitely not a Lite-On, and maybe the 52x24x48 might be the same brand , Asus maybe??

Like I said before:

There is no other 52x drive from TDK right now.
