Hi all,
just wondering, recently picked up a Samsung burner model #SW-248B 48x16x48 and was very dissapointed to find out that the drive only burns at the medias designated speed (I'm currently using some no name CDR's and burner only allows 16x max write speed )

I played with other 40x burners and they burnt the same CDR's at 40X with no fuss.

What's the deal here? Am i missing something?

Is it a burner specific feature to burn CD's at their reccomended speed?

I updated the firmware to 501 and didn't do anything noticable....

When theirs no media in drive 48x speed is selectable but as soon as a media is inserted it switches to 16x...

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

What burning software are you using? Some software (e.g. Nero) with some drives allows you to override the speed the drive selects.

First, make sure DMA is enabled for the drive. Need help with that? Look here - http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7625

Second, try burning other media that has a higher rated speed. Normally, you can burn CD's quicker if the CD's can handle it, but not all can.

so yes....Ultra DMA is enabled and functioning on the drive.....

I'm using Nero 5.5.9.14 (also tried crappy ECDC Roxio to test).

I have no other media at the moment to test but as mentioned the same media burns at 40x on my buddys LG....

Press the "Options" button at the bottom of the "Choose Recorder" dialog box (Recorder->Choose Recorder). I think you will see a check box that allows you to turn of the Just Speed feature, and thus override the burner's speed choice. After you burn make sure to test the quality of the disc with CDSpeed's scan disk or CD quality check functions. The drive might be limiting your speed because it truly can't do a good job burning at higher speeds, even if your friend's LG can.

I just found out Just Speed is a burner specific option found for example in the SW240 but the 248b seems to have changed that to ExacLink....

Ahh... there must have been a chipset change. Don't disable ExacLink - that will disable your buffer underrun protection and you run the risk of making coasters. Looks like maybe you are limited to the speed that the drive chooses for you. It may be time to invest in some higher speed media as advised by TheWizard. (actually it was probably already time to invest in higher speed media, but we were trying to wring every last ounce of speed from those older discs of yours )

Is the Samsung a bad machine or are there some solution???
