pacific digital different model no# than lite on??

i just but a pacific digital that is a LITE ON model but shows up on my computer as CDR 5W48 not LTR-48125W. It's a LITE ON because i bought the same drive 3 months ago but that showed up on my computer as a LTR-48125W. My question is: if i go on the lite on website and download the lastest firmware to change it back to a lite on firmware, will it cause a problem with the drive? And is it a LTR-48125W or another LITE ON model?

May not be a LiteOn drive, P.D. uses several OEM drives.

If you flash your drive with Lite-On firmware for the LTR-48125W, it should not have any problems since its really a Lite-On drive under the case.

Your drive is really a Lite-On LTR-48125W and you should check out this thread as it relates to your drive.

Somebody bought one of these drives a few months ago and asked the same question. I did some research then and found that the drive is manufactured by Lite-On and is an OEM version of the 48125W.

Check these links if you're in doubt about the manufacturer:

http://www.roxio.com/en/jhtml/extranet/ ... tml/L.html
http://nti.downloadtech.net/pub/support ... Readme.txt

I'd try flashing the drive with the 48125W firmware using MTKFlash.

sorry i can't figure the mtflash or the flasfix thing but

i can't figure it out but i appreciate everyone's help and i am happy with what i have anyway because it still performs like a true lite on. so i am happy plus grateful for the help and lucky to get another LITE ON even though i am too stupid to figure out how to make it a regular lite on firmware. By the way did i tell you that OFFICE MAX gave me the drive for $19.99 without rebates because they did not have the I/O MAGIC in stock that was on sale for $39.99 w/20.00mail-in rebate.

Get the official R48VS08 firmware from here:

http://www.liteonit.com.tw/english/e-down-f.asp

Unzip it, then read about the FlashFix program here:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8059

And get FlashFix from Dimitri's site at:

http://digi.web1000.com/

(follow the link "The LiteOn/JLMS DVD's pages" to "The official "How to upgrade firmware" and "NEW: Allow a firmware to flash ANY drive with FLASHFIX" pages)

Read the cautions about flashing a drive in general and using FlashFix in particular, then use FlashFix to convert the executable extracted from R48VS08.zip into a version that won't check what it is flashing before it flashes (this is what allows you, in this case, to transition from the Pacific Digital into a standard LiteOn). Finally, run the converted executable, make sure to select the right drive, and flash your way to a LTR-48125W!

I TRIED A AGAIN WITH FLASHFIX

I TRIED A AGAIN WITH FLASHFIX AND IT SAID PERMISSION FAILED ACCESS DENIED

No need to yell.

What said "PERMISSION FAILED ACCESS DENIED"? The FlashFix program itself when you tried to fix the VS08.EXE file? Did you see this?

Code: Select all
C:\>flashfix VS08.EXE

JLMS/LTD Flasher Patch

Failed!
Permission Denied.

That's not a big deal. I just tried it myself and found that the VS08.EXE file, as extracted from R48VS08.zip, has the read-only attribute set. Just clear the read-only attribute, and it will work fine:

Code: Select all
C:\>attrib -r vs08.exe

C:\>flashfix VS08.EXE

JLMS/LTD Flasher Patch

Creating Backup.. Done
Loaded VS08.EXE in memory @ 0x410020-0x526820
Searching 0x410020-0x526820  Current: 0x413CB0  File Pos: 0x3C90        Patched
Searching 0x410020-0x526820  Current: 0x526723  File Pos: 0x116703      Looking

All Done Searching, File Was Patched.

As a general note (and a partial reiteration of a post made yesterday), please tell us exact error messages and exactly what you were doing when something went wrong rather than just saying "it doesn't work!" It will make our job of trying to help easier and improve your odds of getting the help you want.

I'm not being insulting here, but please be extra careful when you run the patched VS08.EXE file. The patching removes protections in the file that would normally prevent you from making a mistake and flashing the wrong drive. If you do flash the wrong drive, you could ruin it. I'm a little concerned that if a read-only file attribute is stumping you that perhaps you shouldn't be flashing a drive, particularly without the safety nets that FlashFix removes.

Here's a new firmware for that drive:

I am confused...

This thread talks about how to fix the flash to make the CDR-5W48 a 48125W. The last response was a download for the latest CDR-5W48 firmware, VSG5.

So, is the appropriate action to take upgrading to VSG5, or to do the Flash Fix on VS08? Or is there some fix to be done to VSG5?

I am uncertain whether VSG5 will give Mt. Rainier, or allow the burner to operate with all the superlative features and performance of the 48125W. I know that the drive is the same (um you are 100% SURE this is the same drive, right?) but I suspect that different SW will treat it differently depending on what it 'sees' the drive as being.

One example is DirectCD Mt. Rainier support on CDRs, not CD-RWs.

Any clarification will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

VSG5 is the latest upgrade for the 5W48 and you don't have to use flashfix to get ti to update your drive. VS08 is newer than VSG5 so I would recomment that you convert your drive...

Thanks for the advice, would you use flashfix or mtkflash to do this? If mtkflash, which version?

Also, there seems to be info in usenet that this is an S drive not a W drive. Are you 100% sure that it is a W drive? Have you done it? I don't want to cripple this burner.

Thanks again.

Firmwares for 5S and 5W drives are interchangable so it doesn't matter at all. Try the flashfix way first.
