What does it mean when a drive says 2MB/8MB buffer?

The 2MB/4MB/8MB Buffer is the amount of memory used to support the buffer underrun protection on your CD-RW drive. The buffer is also used to cache the data as its being transfered from the hard drive or another optical drive to the CD your during the data to. A bigger buffer isn't necessary when you have a fairly powerful computer and a 2MB buffer will do you just fine. Only a few companies still use the 8MB buffer as the buffer underrun technology has been steadily increasing in effectiveness and most companies have switched to a 2MB buffer.

I know what it means but, on the review for the
LG GCE-8400B it says
Buffer Size 2MB/8MB

Sorry if I was answering the wrong question. You weren't clear in your post and what you were referring to. It just means that some of the newer verions of this LG drive were shipped with 2MB buffers while some of the older LG drives were shipped with 8MB buffers.

thanks.. I thought it was a firmware thing were you can upgrade it to 8mb. I guess I was wrong

The cache size is hardcoded into the drive, no firmware update will change it.

either way, a 2mb buffer is fine, even @ 52x. I've never had a coaster @ 52x. The media has to be able to handle the write speed before you even try a 52x burn.
As BuddhaTB said, you don't really need an 8mb buffer anymore.
I believe Yamaha & Samsung are the only companies making 8mb buffers anymore. I'm not sure about Plextor though.
Nero has the ability to set up it's own internal buffer manually or automatically. Mine is set to auto, and I've never had a problem. (33mb I believe is the current setting).

Plextor drives still come with a 4MB cache.
