The point of a real gold layer is to improve long-term archival performance since gold, as a noble element, will not corrode. The point of a fake gold layer is to look like real gold and fool you into thinking you are getting something you aren't.
I personally don't recommend paying extra for true gold CD-Rs unless you are burning CDs specifically for long-term archival storage.
