Verbatim/Cendyne 48x12x48 (AOpen 48x12x50) major problems

I have purchased three of these drives, one a rebadged Cendyne, and am having major problems with them.
First, two of the drives cause a complete system lock-up (and reboot) ONLY when the "speed-boost" feature is enabled. This occurs when I try to run Nero CDSpeed or read any CDs at the "50x max" speed. I have tried several different discs (TDK, PNY, Phillips, Sony, and one commercially-pressed audio CD).
Secondly, one of the drives experiences a major "read" speed drop (like 43x down to 6x) while completing Nero CDSpeed, again only when the "speed-boost" feature is enabled. Sometimes the drop is only momentary, then it recovers, and other times it plummets at the end of the test.
I have flashed all three drives to the latest firmware version, downloaded from Cendyne's website. I have also tried them in two different computers.
Has anyone experienced any of these issues? Any ideas? Thanks for any assistance, before I return these back to where I purchased them!
