Maxell won't make 52X cd-r's

I read in Maximum PC that Maxell has decided not to make the 52X cd-r's because "the small incremental increase in speed from 48x is not worth the risk of spinning a CD over 10,000 RPM's".

Sorry if this was discussed before. Is this a verdict against higher speeds than 48x?

Some drive manufacturers like Plextor will not be coming out with a 52X burner as well. So it's no surprise that Maxell will not be making 52X blank media.

You can see some good impression on the 52x drives through few threats and Ian's nice review in this forum. My Liteon LTR-52246S can burn many 40x and 48x certified discs at 52x without any demaged or unreadable area :). Even Imation 48x will do, although it had a high C1 average in CD Doctor scan. But remember not to use any cracked discs to write or read at 52x.

CMC Magnetics & Verbatim is picking up the slack.

That's a 52x CMC disc pictured above, burned at 52x.
The disc came with my 52x Lite On drive.

I'm getting similar results with 48x Verbatims @ 52x.

Ian reported this week that Verbatim is making 52x discs, but they're not available yet.

So, when Maxell starts to loose market share, they'll start making 52x discs.

There was a fair amount of discussion about this already. You might want to read through this thread:
