I already have a LTR/48125W. I want to replace my ageing Acer 50x cd rom drive. I am planning to go for a second cd writer(LG 48x). Should I instead go for a dvd rom drive like LTR 166s ?

Thanks.....

That depends. Are you going to be watching DVD movies on your computer? If yes, by all means go in for a DVD drive. The 166S costs Rs 2200-2500 here in Bombay. But if you are not going to watch DVDs on your computer, and are looking to burn >1 disc simultaneously, you can go in for a writer like the 8481B, which costs 3300 Rs here in Bombay. The choice is yours to make. But just remember that when burning 2 discs simultaneously, you will only be able to burn at the speed of the slower writer, but this should not be a problem in your case, as you already have an LTR48125W.
For general use, both a DVD drive and a writer would be pretty much the same (speedwise). So the choice is yours to make, after evaluating your own needs.
Good luck making up your mind

I am currently in the same situation.

Hi! Bhairav.

I already have a Lite-On 48125S

Want to replace my LG 52x cd-rom with a CD-Rewriter. I don't watch DVD movies.

Now, Shall I get a Samsung 48x24x48x or LG 48x24x48x?

Don't know if Lite-On 48x24x48x has arrived in India.

Heard some odd experiences about LG 8481B. So, what you guys have to say about this.

I recommend that you go for the DVD drive.

Fry's Electronics has a great deal on a DVD drive for only $35.00

The reason I recommend that is because you will be able to read DVD's and copy data from them. I have a wedding DVD that I was able to use the new DVD drive to copy the data from and back up onto my hard drive.

It gives you more flexiblity this way.

@UALOneKPlus

Well, DVDs are not common at all in my part of the world. CDs are the only thing that people use in common here.

No use of DVD for me.

I can afford it but, I will not be able to share DVDs with anyone as no one has a DVD-ROM.

If it's available, why not get a CDRW/DVD Combo drive?

I'm waiting for my LG GCC 4480B 48/24/48/16 that I ordered to arrive.

There's an LG chapter in India : http://www.lgindia.com

I'm not saying that it has to be an LG but the DVD playback is fairly quiet on their 32/10/40/16 combo drive.

My idea is to shell out minimum money. I'll be giving 2 CD-ROMs as buy-back to the dealer & just pay the difference.

That dealer doesn't sell lite-ons. Thats why I am considering LG or Samsung.
