AOPEN 4048 = USELESS

Hi all, I bought a Aopen 4048 writer, it worked well for 4 months and is now giving me write errors at 78% when burning. Despite updating the firmware and changing OS (WIN98/2000). Having visited the aopen site, i have noticed this drive has REAL problems due to the level of complaints.

Since aopen is not interested in resolving the situation, can anyone shed any light on this as I am about to lob it in the bin an get a liteon instead!!!

If you are in the US, I can give you the AOpen technician number. He's very nice, tell him the situation and he might send you a 48xRW for replacement drive.

Hmmm.

Aopen had problems like this with the 24x as well. I do hope we're not getting a sense of deja-vu here :(

I have to say though, that the Artec drives, which are very similar to the Aopen ones, are holding up extremely well. I have a 32x and a 48x here (I've overclocked the 32x to 48x, and the 48x was given to me by a bloke in disgust although it now turns out it just needed a firmware update and works just fine) and they are both getting a fair old beating, one in an IDE duplicator. Both are good.

On the other hand, my Aopen 40x's bearings seem to be going -- it's very noisy. That said, it might just not be able to take the strain of being overclocked to an Artec 48x lolol.

These drives do require a LOT of power. If you can, I'd try using it on a skeleton system with a big meaty PSU.
