Memorex 52x24x52 Firmware Question

From the hot deals section:

Memorex 52x24x52 Internal CD-RW Drive
$79.99 - $20 Mail-In Rebate - $10 Mail-In Rebate = $49.99 HOT!
*Made By Lite-On, But Uses Memorex Firmware*

Since my Lite-On 40X may be dying, is it *just* a Memorex firmware, with the drive being otherwise identical to the Lite-On? I'm wondering if the Lite-On firmware can be flashed to the drive, with a flashing utility, I think it was MKFLASH, to make it basically a Lite-On that says Memorex on the tray front?

Yes, it is an honest-to-goodness LiteOn hiding behind the Memorex label, and it can be flashed with official LiteOn firmware via either Mtkflash or FlashFix. This was discussed (again) just a couple of days ago:

Thanks. Anyone know if the latest CDRWin will recognize a Lite-On 52X24X52? I think everything else I have would be ok.

I take it that the Lite-On 52x24x52 is the "LTR-52246S" on the list? I never even bothered to check Goldenhawk's site, as the supported drive list used to be sooooo out of date. Last time I had to check, when upgrading to the Lite-On 40X, it wasn't listed, but it did work.

I just did the math, and why bother with the Memorex and the rebates. The Pricewatch price at nexthardware.com for the Lite-On retail is only about $3 more than the Best Buy price after tax and rebate. Their price is a few dollars more than that at their on-line order site (higher than their listing on Pricewatch), so I'm going to call tomorrow and ask for the pricewatch price to be honored.
