we'll be glad to try to help you out, but we need more info.

for starters:
what drive? type (CDRW/DVDROM/DVD burner), what brand and model, what firmware version?
what OS are you running?
what motherboard/what chipset is in it?
what IDE drivers do you have installed?

I have this drive, I was under the impression that LG drives (cept the new new ones) don't even support DMA.

Am I wrong here?

in the box it says that the drive has Multi Word DMA Mode 2 support

OK, support DMA, don't support UDMA, so the best you can get is Multi-Word DMA Mode 2.

try removing the VIA IDE drivers (going back to the Microsoft ones).
