It supports C2 error correction. What it does not support is C2 error reporting. Thus, your drive corrects the errors, but can't tell you where and how many it corrected. This does not affect operation of your drive in normal usage. Many drives do not report C2 errors, and this isn't a reason to be concerned about your drive.

Just a question !
Does the 248f supports C2 Error Reporting ?

I don't know, but if the SW-248B does not, it doesn't seem likely that the SW-248F would.

please tell me exactly. I might change this drive with 248f for just 3 $ so please tell me !
Is there any drive update that can correct this ( c2 error )?
My CD-RW firmware is R503.

I can't tell you exactly since, as I said, I don't know. Maybe someone who owns the drive will be able to help. Why don't you try to convince LeBrian to keep his, open it up and install it, and tell you what he sees:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 3012#53012

But in the meantime, let me ask you this: Do you plan to burn to rewritable discs? If so, then a $3 upgrade to the 'f' version is probably worthwhile for the 24x rewriting speed alone.

The drive numbers and performance are so similar that it wouldn't surprise me if the 'b' variant could be flashed to the 'f' variant, but again I don't know this to be a fact. Sorry. I'm not providing you many concrete answers.

In my country hard you can find 16x CD-RW, so 24x ...
Maybe I can make a firmware upgrade to have C2 Error reporting ?
Please tell me.

Thx

i would go for the F model for $3.
even if there is no fast CDRW media now, there will be in the future.

also, the B model does not report C2 errors. so going to the F model can't get any worse.
in the worst case the F model does not report C2 errors either.
in the best case it does!
so why not???

try to find a review of the Samsung SM-248F model on the net

sorry, can't, cause i also searched google and didn't find any review of this drive :o
too bad :x

oh well, hopefully someone in the forum has the drive and will check it.

maybe try also in forums of other CDR related sites.

somewhat off-topic, i don't really understand what the C2 Errors checkbox in InfoTool really means.
i've got a new CDROM drive (LG GCR-8520B), InfoTool does have the C2 Errors checked, but trying to run ScanDisc i get: "Warning! The drive is unable to report damaged sectors."
what does this mean?
does the drive report C2 error info or not?
what does the checkbox in InfoTool really mean?

maybe someone who knows is following this thread...

I think you are probably seeing the infamous unreliability of information reported by InfoTool. It isn't all InfoTool's fault, since I believe it just parrots the capabilities as reported by the drive, and that information isn't always accurate. I would trust CD Speed over InfoTool on this one.

Have you tried testing a known-bad disc with this drive using CD Speed? Did it show up all green even though you know it shouldn't?

no.
i don't have such a disc.
tried to test a regular CD (CDRW actually) with CDSpeed. ScanDisc.

disc didn't even spin up.
CDSpeed froze.

tried another CDSpeed, nothing doing.

right now i have 2 CDSpeeds in the Task Manager that won't close - can't end the process.
since then opened two more explorer windows by clicking the icon in the quick launch (or rather tried - the windows did not open). two iexplore processes in task manager that won't close.

clicking on the CDROM icon on the desktop - won't open the explorer window with the drive's contents.

:o :x  :o :x  :o :x

waiting to log off the forum and the internet to restart computer.

Ahh, the joys of computers and computer software... :(

By the way, you can always make a bad disc if don't have one handy. Just get out your favorite brand of permanent ink marker...

or my wife's audio (bought) CDs.
she just used to leave them lying everywhere, on the floor, thrown on top of each other etc...
some now started skipping...
she said she thought that the music was on the TOP side of the CD :o LOL
too bad for her now she has a husband who is pedantic about his CDs to the point of being anal about it.

I say lucky for her she has such a good, concerned husband. :D

Of course, maybe she won't have a husband after she finds out about you enjoying BuddhaTB's new avatars... :-?

Back on topic: One cannot flash the fimware of the SW-248B with the SW-248F's firmware.

Why? Because each drive has a different chipset manufacturer. The SW-248B uses the ExacLink buffer underrun prevention technology from Oak Technology; the SW-248F uses the JustLink buffer underrun prevention technology from Ricoh.

Currently, Samsung's US product line is all over the map when it comes to chipsets. Here is a breakdown (with the name of the buffer underrun technology in parentheses)...

Oak (ExacLink): SW-248B and the upcoming SM-352B (52/24/52/16);
MediaTek (SuperLink): SM-348B;
Ricoh (JustLink): SW-248F, SM-332B, SW-240B, and all burners below 40X (IIRC).

I'm not sure which chipset the SW-252B has.

I wonder when Samsung will have a burner that features BURN-Proof? :D

sorry for off-topic again, only just a little bit:

you must have meant: "Ahh, the joy of Windows..."

Unix/Linux: kill -9
no process survives this.

Windows 2000 resource kit includes a command line kill utility as well:

Code: Select all
Microsoft (R) Windows NT (TM) Version 3.5 KILL
Copyright (C) 1994-1998 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved

usage: KILL [options] <<pid> | <pattern>>*

           [options]:
               -f     Force process kill

           <pid>
This is the process id for the task
to be killed.  Use TLIST to get a
               valid pid

           <pattern>
The pattern can be a complete task
name or a regular expression pattern
to use as a match.  Kill matches the
supplied pattern against the task names
              and the window titles.

I don't know whether or not it's -f switch would have worked on your rogue processes, but it might be worth a try some time. It probably works on XP as well. You can get kill.exe by itself here:

http://www.dynawell.com/support/ResKit/win2k.asp

Sysinternals has their own version, which purportedly can kill processes on remote machines as well:

I have the Samsung SW-248F. Infotool says that it has c2 error reporting. It's a great drive too by the way. I still have to get some 48x media to really test it out though.
I paid $55 for mine.

OK, but does it really report C2 errors, or does InfoTool just say it does?
can you check this out by running CDSpeed ScanDisc?

see my experience:

Use Feurio CD-Manager. Program Parameters -> Test Device.
It will show the features that the drive announces about itself (of course, drive can say that it supports C2 pointers but then they will not work correctly).
Most LG writers report c2 errors, so that 52x model will also do it.

You can check it reading some scratched CD with Feurio if you enable c2 errors reporting in the Special Parameters of the drive. Most LG drives can't report c2 errors and read index marks in Feurio at the same time, so disable index marks.
