The frustration has finally gotten to me. I have to ask someone else to help dig me out of this hole I have dug for myself.

I have 10 74min 650mb CD/RW discs that were previously formatted using Roxio DirectCD's UDFRDR format. I do not use DirectCD anymore, and want to erase these discs and burn information to them using Nero Burning ROM.

Everytime I try to erase these discs in Nero (or CDRWin or BlindWrite or CloneCD for that matter) I receive the error "SCSI target error". In CDRWin I get a "command failed / illegal command request error".

I *CAN* burn new CD/RWs as well as all CD/Rs with no problems.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP1 with a Sony CRX1611 drive.

First, are you having problems with erasing any CD-RW discs, or just those formatted with DirectCD?

According to Nero's helpfiles, "SCSI Target Error" may appear if a disc has already been inserted before Nero asks for it. So call up Nero| Recorder| EraseReWritable, choose Full-erase and an erase speed not greater than your media rating, then click Erase and insert the disc when Nero asks for it.

What does Nero InfoTool say about Autorun for your burner? And the ASPI layers?

You should try both settings for Autorun: on and off.

To get Autorun off, either use Notepad to create a file called autorun0.reg that contains the following four lines

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
"AutoRun"=dword:00000000

and run it by double clicking on autorun0.reg in Explorer, or edit the registry. (If you replace the final 0 by 1, you'll get Autorun on.)

Also check that none of your programs is "hiding CD-R media", etc.

Just those formatted with DirectCD.

Hm. I couldn't find diddly squat on that error.

Tried what you suggested and got a different error "Medium Not Present".

Autorun is off. DMA is on.

Tried SuperBlank. Says that it needs the Adaptec ASPI drivers. These are already installed - 4.7.02. I get the following error:

*** : Blank : ATAPI request completed with error (04) (00) (02), Adapter 1 - Target 1
*** Illegal Request (05) - Write Protected (27) (00)
CDB (12 Bytes) : a1 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

You have 3 options as I see it:

1) trash the discs (I wouldn't though).

2) Re-install Direct CD and read the info off the discs (just in case you need it), then full erase the discs.

3) Use ForceASPI to change your ASPI to an older version that Superblank is looking for. You can always change it back. Just use the backup ASPI feature of ForceASPI. Or just set a System Restore Point in XP before you do it. Then just restore back to that point when you're done erasing the discs.

Is your burner hooked up to a PCI ATA card of some kind ?

Actually, set a System Restore Point up now anyway. That way you have nothing to loose by trying a few things.

I saw Spazmogen's reply when I tried to post the message given below; well, maybe DirectCD could erase your discs, but if you install it together with EasyCD Creator, it might be difficult to clean up your system later.

Somehow your old DirectCD discs are not being recognized correctly.

I agree that it might be wisest to throw them away. However, it won't hurt to troubleshoot your system a bit further. (BTW, I presume you have the latest Nero 5.5.10.7b, and possibly InCD 3.52.00b.)

2. You could check the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values

On my XP Pro SP1 box, LowerFilters has the value bsstor, corresponding to the driver bsstor.sys installed by InCD 3.52.00b, whereas UpperFilters has the value incdrm, corresponding to the driver incdrm.sys installed by EasyWriteReader.

3. You could extract the final "Existing Drivers" section from the Nero log file and post it here. Similarly, you may compare the contents of your directories with those listed in point (10) of

and post any significant differences here, so that we could check for possible driver conflicts.

4. You could try to update your burner's firmware; for instance, TYS3 is available at

Whelp...decided to rebuild my system, which needed to be done anyway. Did not make any difference with erasing the CD/RWs.

I decided to trash those CDs and buy some new ones...MicroCenter had 10X TDK discs on sale for $.99 and they work great.
