After rebates, of course.
Anyone know what this drive really is?
Any chance they might be liteons?

the benq drive is actually pretty good regardless of the bad things said about benq's. my norcent rw481(benq) works perfectly for me.

Despite all the negative reputation that BenQ has, I guess for $10 you really can't go wrong (unless the rebates don't come thru).

If I really needed a CDRW I guess I'd buy one, as long as I had a Lite-On to verify the CD-R that the BenQ produced!

Are you sure it's a benq? The model I looked at was CW 4802, an Optorite drive. The front of the CDRW is flat, unlike another Optorite that i purchased a couple of weeks ago, but it's an Optorite...

At my local OfficeMax, they were out and subbed a Pacific Digital (BTC evidently) for 29.99 (it has a 20.00 mail in rebate). I've heard it's a crap drive, however for 10.00 I can't complain.

Hi:

I have ordered a Verbatim 48x12x48x online. It should arrive tomorrow. How to check if it is a Lite-on one before opening the box? Does Verbatim make any Lite-on cdrw drives?

Thanks for any info on this.

From the outside of the Verbatim box, you can't tell what you have inside. The only way to determine what drive you have is to install it into the computer and then run Nero's Infotool on the drive to see what firmware it uses. From the firmware number, we can determine who made your drive. Verbatim has never used Lite-On drives for their 48x models, so there is almost no chance of your drive being a Lite-On.

Local Office Max store was out of Verbatim 48x12x48 drives, they substituted a Verbatim 52x24x52 drive for the same net price $9.99 plus tax after M.I.R. Shows part #VBT522452A nothing on CD drive to indicate manufacturer. Just bought it this morning and have not installed it yet. Just curious to know if anyone can tell me who makes this drive. Thank you in advance.

is it really worthed the hike?? damn.. what's the point of being squeezing every penny out of the deal when basically any drive can get the job done?? should you be better off by spending the time making the money other than looking for a better deal??

That's a Benq. :(

(from http://www.benq.com/storage/storage_4816p.html)

But at least it is the 4816P, meaning it has 16x rewriting capability. The latest firmware for that drive is A.YZ:
