It measures the ATIP Error Rate. Specifications require it to be at most 10%, the equivalent of 7 errors per second.

(from a useful glossary at Mitsui Advanced Media: http://www.mam-e.com/public/us/web/lexique.phtml)

What does that mean in practice? I don't know, but obviously the lower the better. I would guess that if ATER is too high, tracking through the disc becomes difficult.

I tried to run the ATER test using WSES. This is the result:

The blank cdr that I used for this test:
Sony/TY
Kodak Ultima 80
Duraplus/Prodisc
Tinlex/POSTECH

It seem that cdr by TY and Kodak produced no ATER at all. Further confirm the status of the two companies as the best cdr manufacturer.

In addition to the 10% average maximum ATER, there is an additional requirement that at most 3 consecutive frames have ATIP errors.

You might also be interested in some brief definitions of a number of other error parameters associated with CDs:

ATER (ATIP Error Rate) is the number of erroneous ATIP frames
in proportion to the total number of frames, averaged over 10
seconds. You can see it as C1 errors for ATIP informations : keep
the same drive and change the discs, you will compare the discs'
mastering quality. Keep the same disc and change the drives,
you will compare the drives' wobble and atip detection.
