CDRLabs has taken a look at TDK's new external writer, the veloCD 48/16/48 USB 2.0 CD-RW. Along with an attractive external case and an ultra fast USB 2.0 interface, this drive has many of the features we've come to expect from TDK including buffer underrun protection and support for the Mt. Rainier format. In this review we'll take a look at some of the veloCD's features and then see how it performs. Does it deliver the performance and features that we've come to expect from TDK? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Before someone asks, this drive is NOT based on a Lite-On design. Instead, its very similar to the ASUS CRW-4816A.

On the Performance page, Mt. Rainier Tests - InCD 3.51: "the scores from a few other writers we've tested that have supported the Mt. Rainier format" are not included in the table. :(

I have this very drive, I've had it for about a month now. Ever since I bought it, it has burned extremely slowly. I've contacted TDK support, and they haven't helped much. There is only one set of driver's for the drive, so I know that's not it. I am running from a notebook computer, with a 4200 RPM drive. I have USB 2.0 ports via a PCMCIA card manufactured by Buslink. I am working in Windows XP Home. The drive seems to work fine, but whenever I burn CD-R discs, the times are terrible. The fastest burn I have had to date was 3:19, burning a full audio disc with approximately 20 MP3 tracks. However, when I try to burn data files, or MP3 tracks as data, the times slow down considerably. They go up to about 4:30. I still have not been able to find out what's wrong. I've tried using different media, and I am currently using 48x Fuji (Taiyo Yuden) media. I've tried using the drive vertically and horizontally. I really don't know what is wrong. My only idea is that perhaps my hard drive is too slow, and data cannot be sent to the burner quickly enough. This might account for the reason why burning MP3 tracks as audio is significantly faster than burning data.

Well, other people are getting speeds of 2:30, and the review got speeds of less than 3 minutes for the drive. I have the latest drivers for the PCMCIA card, and that only seems to improve the speed by 5 seconds at the most. Something has to be up here...
