Bug in Nero CD Speed v1.02e

After updating to CD Speed v1.02e, I am unable to access the CDSpeed.chm help manual from the program menu. I tried downloading the NeroCDSpeed_100.chm help file from the CD Speed site, but the name change didn't make a difference.

Reinstalling v1.02 allowed the help manual to be accessed normally, so I conclude that there is a related bug in v1.02e.

I emailed Erik Deppe today to advise him of this behavior.

My CD Speed 1.02e, which came with Nero 5.5.10.20, works with CDSpeed.chm, which I downloaded from Ahead's site and put in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero Toolkit several months ago.

This version is identical to CDSpeed.chm available on Ahead's Nero download page under "Important Additional Information", and to NeroCDSpeed_100.chm from www.cdspeed2000.com (except for the changed name).

So apparently Eric Deppe only needs to rename NeroCDSpeed_100.chm to CDSpeed.chm on his site. 8)

I have upgraded to 5.5.10.20 with CDSpeed 1.02e and I have no difficulty to access the help manual of CDSpeed. So far I haven't witness any sign of missbeahavier in new Nero version 5.5.`0.20 or its component of CDSpeed 1.02e.

It would be natural for both Ahead and Eric Deppe to use the same name CDSpeed.chm for CD Speed's help file.

Yet another point is that, since Nero installs CD Speed, Nero's help file packages should include CDSpeed.chm. However, Ahead's guys seem to be too busy to listen to our various suggestions for improvements...

Apparently, this misbehavior is caused by something specific to my system(s). As of yet, I have been unable to isolate it. I have tried all combinations of downloads, renaming, etc. to no avail. v1.02 works with the help file and v1.02e doesn't. This same behavior occurs on two separate computers.

I tried to redownload the CDSpeed.chm from the link on Ahead's site, but the FTP site won't currently connect. I'll try it again later.

Thanks for the replies. :)

If you are still haunting for differences, I may add that CDSpeed.exe installed by Nero 5.5.10.20 is identical to the zipped version from www.cdspeed2000.com.

I've tried every combination that I can think of with the same results.

This may be one of those weird PC conflicts related to something loaded on my computers. In any event, it isn't much of a concern.

Lots of times, these problems seem to solve themselves if ignored long enough.

After installing the latest Nero version with CD Speed 1.02g, I was hopeful that the help file might open normally. Not so on my Win98SE systems, but on a WinXP Pro (dual boot) it works normally.

Maybe this malfunction is somehow related to Win98SE. Does anyone with this operating system have the same problem, or does it operate normally for you with Win98SE installed?

Do you have any information on what the difference to 1.02e is? That's still the latest version available at http://www.cdspeed2000.com.

I was surprised to see the updated v1.02g for Nero CD Speed included in the Nero 5.5.10.28 download.

I haven't seen any information that indicates what changes have been made in CD Speed. A casual look at the menus & options looks the same and reveals nothing to me.

I guess we'll just have to wait until Erik Deppe posts some information about changes in this version.

Inertia:

I have just upgraded to Nero 5.5.10.28 on my XP and 98SE boxes. My situation is the same as yours: the help file for CD Speed 1.02g opens normally on XP, but not on 98SE.

I have also tested versions 1.00, 1.01.3 and 1.02e. The earlier versions 1.00 and 1.01.3 work as expected (even when renamed and put in a separate directory together with CDSpeed.chm), but 1.02e behaves like 1.02g. Further, neither 1.00 nor 1.01.3 display help when CDSpeed.chm is missing in the directory in which they reside, or when they are launched in an MS-DOS Prompt window with a different current directory.

Peeking into the executables, I see that the main strings section ends with "open CDSpeed.chm" for 1.00 and 1.01.3, which is extended to "open CDSpeed.chm CDSpeed.exe" for 1.02e and 1.02g. I hope this helps Eric Deppe in locating the bug! :P

Thanks, KCK, this confirms my findings. :)

I'll send another email to Erik and hope that he has time to run this bug down.

Erik Deppe has advised me that he has discovered the cause of the help file problem in Win98. It will be fixed in the next release.

Thanks, Erik :)
