I've got both Plextors and Liteons (sorry hoxlund and scour
) and have experienced this effect with both. It doesn't always seem to happen with all software. It may be that some software can use MMC commands to refresh the burner contents after the conclusion of a burn, but this is just a hypothesis.
I don't know of any way of determining this effect other than an empirical approach.
Generally, I think it is best to open the tray after a burn by default to ensure that the drive contents are refreshed.
