This is probably another newbie question, but I'll ask it anyway. I have a Lite-on 52246S, Lite-on XJ-HD 166S and Nero. I was wondering if it is possible to rip a copy of a DVD onto my Hard Drive? And, if not is there and free software out there that will allow me to do that with the hard ware I have now?

Download DVDshrink (free)
Nero

You can also download CloneDVD, http://www.elby.ch, and try it out. It has a 30 day fully functional demo.

Though I'd recommend using DVDShrink.

thanks a lot for all the great advice. I finally was able to rip the DVD to my hard drive, but it is in 5 different parts and I can't play it strait through.

I also have been reading a lot and am confused on how to burn a SVCD. Do I have to convert the VOB files to another format. Nero says that they have to be MPEG2, but I am not sure on how to do this.

I know these might be trivial questions, but some of the lingo out there is pretty complex for someone that is kind of new to the more intricate side of computing

If you want to go from DVD to SVCD then use DVD2SVCD.

Go to www.dvd2svcd.org. It can use TMPGEnc or CCE for MPEG2 encoding.

I use both Smart Ripper & DVD Decrypter.

One feature I love about DVD Decrypter is the ability to make an .ISO image of the disc, then just use Nero to burn it to DVD (FILE -> BURN IMAGE). As long as it fits on 1 disc you're fine. No need to buy CloneDVD.

Otherwise, you'll need other software as already mentioned to shrink it to fit or split it across 2 discs.

I use IFO Edit for stripping unwanted language & angle tracks. Which helps shrink to over all size.

Then, you guessed it, burn it with Nero again.

If you're thinking about making an .ISO you'll be wise to make sure you use NTFS for your file system and not FAT32. Some ISO's are over 4gb.

Try DVDx it will rip(or IFO from HDD),convert to SVCD and it's free:

To prevent VOB splitting when using DVDDecrypter go to Tools>Settings>IFO>File splitting and select "None"...that is if you have Win2000 or XP.

If you want to encode a VCD, you need to buy the MPEG2 Plugin from Nero $16. Though I'm not sure if you need to encode it as an AVI first. I don't use VCDs.

If you want to watch the files from your hard drive, I don't know of a player that will play VOB files... think you have to use something like Vidomi to encode it as an AVI.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've found that DVD Decrypter is a bit slower, but it does a better job removing region codes.

I Found an application that does all in just one step.

It copies your entire DVD or the parts wou want as, Menus, Angles, Audio or Subtitles. Also it makes files up to the size of a CD-R/W so you just burn the resulting files onto a DVD media.


And they have both version for Mac and Windows.
