CDRW locked when Nero hangs

I'm not sure if it's a software or Windows problem. but it happens with various Nero versions, including the last one, and various writers:
Ocassionaly nero will hang at 96% and become non-responding. I have to close it from the task manager. The problem is that the writer door is locked and the CD keeps spinning until I restart the computer.
Is there any way to spin down and unlock the writer door?

if nero locks and hangs, its basically not releasing the drive to windows

usually everytime you start burning, nero or any other burning software will lock the drive until its done with it

I realize the drive is locked. How do I unlock it after quiting Nero?

restarting computer, or if in external case, just shut down case and turn back on

Ok. Now without restarting...
Is there a command that will unlock it? A service to shut down?

It is if you have things downloading or encoding in the background...

To truly resolve this issue, we need to locate the cause of the hangup. If it were a commond bug, everyone would be running into this.

So that means we must be having a driver conflict with some program running in the background.

If you make sure no other programs are running in the background, do you still encounter this problem?

If not, then use a process of illimination by launching a program one at a time till you find which one is causing it. Or maybe a program that is running from the Systray.

But in answer to your question, once the drive is locked up, there is no command that is going to be accepted, even if you could issue a command to inform it to eject the disc, it will not accept the command. At the completion of any write attempt, the software automatically releases the drive, so the command you want to issue has already been issued, but it's not working. Issuing the command a second time will not accomplish anything.

Regards,

Craig

Try a different brand of media. I've had this happen where I've had to power down the computer and have lost my profile settings in W2K.

Craig,
On second thought, since the program hangs before it finished, the unlock command was not issued. Do you know what that command is?
This does not happen often enough to try to eliminate which program conflicts with Nero. I am just looking for a way to eject the CD without powering down.

Hi Eranros,

Sorry, you are right, the eject command could not have been issued if it hung up prior to completeion of the write. I should have caught that as you did state this clearly.

However, it still remains true that the Recorder is in a hung state and will not accept any commands. If you can press the Eject button on the Recorder, and the disc would eject, then I would say that it would also accept a soft eject via a command issued to it.

But just for your information, all Recording software follow the MMC command set, and you can find the eject command and others in this document. You can download the MMC Command set from OSTA at www.osta.org, but you would need to have some programming skills of course. :)

However, its unlikely to be of any real help.

Regards,

Craig

Well, I would suggest to take MMC specification from the t10 website ( http://www.t10.org ) as T10 MMC workgroup is doing this spec. MMC-3 is the latest approved version, MMC-4 is at an advanced draft state. Additionally, if you are under w2k/XP, I suggest to use STPI to issue scsi commands, or aspi if you are under an older windows system.

I've got same problem

I notice you have an older version of our Nero 6.3.0.3 software. Try upgrading to our latest Nero 6.3.1.17 and see if this helps resolve your issues. Or at least get beyond the handup and allow the creationg of a Log file you can send.
