Does BackItUp Work with DVD for multidisk restores?

I've been using Nero for a year or so and BackItUp seemed to work OK with CDRW's. Now I have a Toshiba SD-R5272 which can burn both CDs and DVDs. But while BackItUp seems to handle multidisks for CDRW, it doesn't seem to handle multidisks for DVD. For example, for a 2-disk DVDRW backup, the second (last) disk has the expected nbi file, txt files, plus directories with nco files. Actually these files are *.nc_ due to 8.3 file names I guess. But during a restore when BackItUp directs me to use the first disk, it turns out that the txt files are empty which prevents BackItUp from using it as a source disk.

I attempted to do a simple multidisk BackItUp using CDRW and it allowed me to use the first disk during a restore since its NB.txt file had the proper info. So it would appear to me that BackupItUp will not work with multidisk DVD backups and restores.

I just installed the lastest version of BackItUp (1.2.0.33) and it works the same way that the earlier version did by not working with DVDs. Just wondering what others might have run into.

Nero's BackItUp works with DVDs, CD's, and DVD-RAM media.

In fact, you can start the Backup with a CD, and for the second disc insert a DVD, and then for the third disc insert a DVD-RAM, and for the final Disc go back to CD. The program does not care what media is inserted as long as it's blank and can be written too.

And the restore should work with DVD, DVD-RAM or CD media.

Did you get any error messages during the backup process, or the verify process?

Craig

Hi Craig,

The backup with DVD seemed to go OK with no error messages. I only noticed a problem when I tried to do a restore. The 1st DVD's txt files were blank which kept BackItUp from using it as a source disk I would guess. I finally had to abort the restore.

The files I was trying to backup were a couple of big video files. I've since split them into smaller files less than 4.7Gb and am copying them to DVD using Nero Buring Rom successfully so far. I might go back and try using BackItUp again and start with a CDRW followed by a DVD and see what happens. I'll report back when I've done so.

Anyway, to recap my problem, my first DVD just doesn't seem to have the info in the txt files needed by BackItUp. And using CDRW's seems to work OK.

Craig,

Part of my problem may have been the DVD media I was using. I was using Staple's DVD+RW(2.4x) when I encountered the problem I've described. I just switched to Memorex DVD+RW(4x) which did create on the 1st disk the proper text files. But the 2nd disk had lots of sector errors revealed during validation. So I aborted that backup.

I was able to copy the files OK using Nero Burning ROM to the Staples DVD's so I'll probably just continue with this method for now and see if my Memorex DVD's can be used for BackItUP later.
