Nero - First To Support Layer-Jump Recording (LJR) of dual-layer DVD-R media

Equipped with this new technology, Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express will now offer OEM customers multi-session burning and improved read compatibility

(May 24, 2005) -- Nero, leaders in digital media technologies, announced today that its applications, Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express, now support Layer-Jump Recording (LJR) of dual-layer DVD-R media, thus permitting multi-session burning, improved read compatibility and a memory capacity of up to 8.5 GB. OEM customers can immediately benefit from this new technology by downloading an update online through the Nero website available mid-June.

Layer-jump recording (LJR) now provides multi-session burning of dual-layer DVD-R media. In other words, data can be added to a medium over several burning sessions, with the sessions appearing in the sequential order in which they were originally recorded. Both Nero and the burner manufacturer’s firmware previously only supported disc-at-once (DAO) mode meaning data could be written to a DVD-R only one time.

Unlike dual-layer recording, in which data is first written to one layer and then to the other, layer-jump recording alternates between both layers during the burning process, thereby evenly distributing the data between both layers. The written area of both layers expands evenly outwards with each burning session. This means adjacent layer areas always contain data, resulting in a reduction in background noise and better signal quality. This, in turn, leads to higher read compatibility even on DVD-ROM drives.

“We are proud to be the first company to offer our customers burning software supporting this technology,” says Jim Corbett, Executive Director of Nero AG. “New multi-session recording will permit dual-layer DVD-Rs to be burned over several sessions, thus allowing full utilization of the medium.”

Hello!

Sounds nice. Are the -R DL now more compatible with the drives?

>>thereby evenly distributing the data between both layers.
Does that mean there are lots of layer jump everytime... :o ?

That's what it sounds like.

if so then it will be nonsense....maybe someone from Nero can talk about this

maybe the back and forth is done as a spearate layer....the program may "organize" the dvd before burning and write each layer separately with only one layer break

Not necessarily. LJR permits multiple jumping intervals. Either fixed regular jumping interval, or software-choosen jump position. So software will be able minimizing the number of jumps by using one jump per session at the middle of each session.

But after that, for selective readings ? Their will be lots of jumps for a selection of folder...

Nervermind, I'm sure only a (very) few will use that anyway

I'm hoping someonoe might know the answer to this question regarding DVD-R DL....

With DVD+R DL you can specify a transition point as to cut down on the burn time and to specify a transition point that does not occur in the middle of your data. Is this what LJR is for DVD-R DL? Can I alsp specify a transition point for a DVD-R DL burn if the drive doesn't support LJR? Thanks.
