New CD-Rs record ok, no playback

Hey, New here, excuse if in wrong forum. Actually don't have the first idea how to troubleshoot this more than we have.
Here is the situation.
Have a Plexor Premium drive, almost two years old, Nero 6 ultra 6.3.03 never updated, worked fine right out of the box. The only thing this drive and software is used for/by is to copy music files from hard drive to CD for my Grandson. Actually he is the one that has been doing it for the last two years.
When I first set him up with this, two years ago, I bought two 50 packs of Verbatim CD-R 1x-48x cds. He used them all up a few days ago.
So I go to store to get more for him. They don't have them anymore, guy says they are "old". Sells me two packs of fifty Verbatim CD-R 1X-52X cds.
Grandson does his thing, new CDs won't play in his pickup, won't play in his new stereo system at his house.
He told me he records at "8" or "16" speed for best quality sound.
So. do I have bad cds? (no errors at all on burn operations)
or is the Plexor drive not up to this new cd?
Does something need to be changed in set up in Nero?
Any and all suggestions would be appriciated.
If you need additional info I will try to comply.
Thank You
