Another problem

Previewing a music selection on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.com no longer works when clicking on the Windows Media Player link for a particular song on Amazon, or clicking the link on B&N, which requires Windows Media Player. If Nero is the default player for the file type, why doesn't it launch instead of Windows Media Player?

To solve the problem, I reset file types in Windows Media player.

"Missing" CAB and DLL files:

I finally got this POS to install on my notebook by disabling damn near everything on my desktop PC (one shade away from safe mode), installing, then copying the extracted install files (in the temp directory) across the network to the notebook, then installing from there.

Looks like the installer, and probably the whole suite, is some .Net app that is buggy as hell. If your setup is not 100% normal (probably any anti-virus etc) then the installer corrupts some of the extracted CAB files. Manually extracting the CAB files doesn't help, since the archive doesn't contain all of them - a good few of them are "rebuilt" during the install process (probably some attempt at "optimisation") that doesn't work on all setups.

FYI: Stuff that may be relevant (i.e. - the "cause" that is confusing the optimiser/selector/anti-copy/whatever the hell it is that's screwing up.

1 ... AMD Turion 64 running WinXP 32
2 ... Outpost firewall + all modules (including ActiveX blocker etc)
3 ... NOD32 antivir
4 ... SlySoft AnyDVD, CloneCD + CloneDVD

Keep in mind that Nero 6 worked flawlessly on this setup.

Bottom line; I don't like apps that don't like my antivir.

And, hey - are Nero competing with M$ for the "Bloatware of the Year" award, or what? Jeez. One third of a Gig ... for a disc burner ... incredible !!! OK, the single language version is only 100MB, but still - I can't help feeling that Ahead/Nero/Name-of-the-Month have lost their way.

... "only 100MB" ...

Wow, times have really changed.

Nero 7 - spontaneous reboot

Subject says it all - not since the bad-old days of Adaptec EZCD 3/4 have I seen a PC trip out just burning a disc. Although back then at least you got a nice warm BSOD to remind you that it was probably about time to uninstall Adaptec's Alpha-Malware.

And what was it doing?

It ... ejected the disc at the end of a burn verify ... that's it.

Bang ... reboot.

Nice.

Missing cab files are not the problem - Ahead software is!

You want feedback? Pardon my skepticism, but......

I have been experiencing the problem cited as item 4 (missing files from Cabs) since the first day that Nero 7 became available for an upgrade download.
It occurs on 4 different PCs, with fresh installs of Windows 2000 SP 4, Windows XP professional, and Windows XP Home SP2.

It occurs with multiple downloads of the installer.

As shoddily prepared as the Nero 7 installer obviously is, the tech support is even worse.

You ask us for feedback, but to what point?

I have received the same "canned" message response to my "VIP Support" request on this issue SEVEN TIMES. It has the usual litany of "we're too busy to actually read your support requests - perform these steps first" steps.

I dutifully provided all of the requested data, and replied to the message SIX TIMES!.

NERO has read and subsequently ignored my replies and it is obvious they have no intention ve ever actually attempting to respknd to the problem.

I stopped responding after sending my a reply to the 6th message (all replies were read by Nero's "tech support", BTW. It is now 24 days after the frst request.

The problem more than a bug fix - it is shoddy software foisted on the public for the purpose of beta testing, by a company that is purposely stonewalling support requests.

THey know they shipped crap, and they simply don't care.

And BTW, my requests for a refund from sales@nero.com have not had a single response - What a surprise!

@ sundiegojc

I am also feeling the same frustrations; Craig said in an earlier post that Nero would be releasing a web release update soon. WTF does soon mean, the faulty "off the shelve" version and now a very buggy web release that is almost 4 weeks old and no relief in sight.

If Nero really cared about the customer and their reputation you would think that they would have at least released a fix for the problems that they have solved and posted the items they are currently working on the fix for so we would see that they are doing something other than counting the monies coming in from selling the worst piece of software that I have ever experienced.

I have in the past turned so many new users on to Nero Burning ROM and now I can no longer in clear conscious.

Who would have ever thought that Roxio would ever perform heads above Nero??????

Nero owes all of its customers a sincere apology and an expidited working product, NOW!!!

Roxio/Sonic 8 Vs Nero 7

Just had a look at Roxio/Sonic Media Creator 8, and I'm sorry to say that they (Roxio) seem to be on the same development path as Nero.

The two suites are remarkably similar, with Roxio maybe slightly ahead (excuse the pun) in terms of shear quantity of apps, but not necessarily in terms of H264 support and standard burning features.

Still, it does very much look like both parties are "copying" ideas from each other, and the competition has pushed the "bloat" limit to the max.

And ... yup Roxio's s/w caused my PC to trip out also, so I s'pose I can't bitch too much about Nero in particular.

What the hell are these two suites doing that causes our antivir apps to go crazy?

Hmmm.

Visual C++ runtime error!

Whenever i try to do a simple disc copy in Nero 7.0.1.2 and click copy the burning window opens and freezes immediately giving the following error. Other functions work fine. Am using WinXP w/ sp2. Re-installing fixes it temporarily but it comes up again. Searched on google, others are having the prob too but no patch has been released.

BackItUp2 Issue

Craig,
You may not remember me but I was the one who was posting some issues on restoring data from previous BackItUp program. I have been waiting on something like BackItUp2 to be released, which made all restoration possible on Windows base operation, not DOS base. I tried to restore 27 DVD worth of data to 250GB HDD, which was backed it up with BackItUp which came with 6.6.0.0. However, netiher 7.00 nor new version worked. You may find some detail in attached log file but basically, the program does not recognize the source media as DVD but CD and it won't go ahead and restore any of DVD.
I am not sure if my previous posts were still in website, but some more detail of what I have been trying to do can be found in these posts.
I would appreciate your assistance on this.

My issue is with Customer Service

Hi Craig,

A couple years back I purchased a serial number online with my credit card for Nero 6 Ultra and recently wanted to do the same for Nero 7, hopefully with a discount being a currently registered user.

When I saw the release of Nero 7 approaching I began checking the Nero site.

Once it was released all I could find on the Nero Site find was instructions directing me to register so I could receive upgrade offers via email, so I re-registered giving the serial number Nero had given me and it wasn't recognized.

Now 3-4 weeks later still I have not received an upgrade offer.

Maybe it is all GOOD however since from what I see here I will wait til next spring and see if it has most of the kinks out.

regards, Rich

Nero 7 and card readers

I went to move photos from a smart media card to my pc for the first time since I installed Nero 7 Ultra 7.0, using the card reader that came preinstalled with the pc, a new Dell XPS 400. Problem was that no pictures showed on the card after I double clicked the drive for the reader, though there were really 35 pictures on the card.

As the reader worked fine before installing Nero, and since I had not installed any new programs since, I decided to uninstall Nero, on the hunch that Nero may have something to do with the problem. Doing so not only uninstalled Nero, it uninstalled all the drives associated with the reader from My Computer and from Device Manager.

Dell tech support helped me restore the drives.

Does anyone know how to get a refund from Nero for their pathetic program?

Here's one for you

I installed Nero 7. After installing, I tried to use Paint Shop Pro 9 and import items from my scanner(HP PSC750) as I always have done. I got this error message:

"An error occurred trying to enable the data source"

It failed to scan. When installing Nero 7 the 1st time, I installed the entire package which included InCD. I tried everything to fix this issue which included uninstalling and reinstalling my printer AND Paint Shop Pro. I also uninstalled Nero 7 and left it uninstalled. Nothing worked.
I then restored a Ghost backup of my entire drive that didn't included Nero of any kind(I am a owner of Nero 6 and never had this problem). I then immediately installed Nero 7 only this time the recent (DEMO?) version. I installed the entire package again. I again had the same problem.

I Ghosted again and installed Nero 7 from my CDs and this time didn't install InCD or the Photosnap stuff. Everything works fine still. I don't know for sure which thing caused my problem but it must be InCD or photosnap. Probably InCD, since that is one you don't install automatically for some reason. :-k

If I'm going to continue to troubleshoot software I paid for I would like some form of compensation(maybe a free future Nero UPGRADE, not update) Why would you release something retail with the known bugs? You know, the updater problem. I'm guessing you knew about other bugs but shipped anyway. I don't WANT to sound harsh but come on. I'm guessing from other posts in the Nero side of this forum that I won't be receiving responses to my emails about this issue other than the ridiculous autoresponse ones I have received. Here's an idea, put a link to this Sticky thread in the auto-emails. It would save a whole lot of aggrevation for people having problems and are WAITING for responses for issues YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT! [-X

I shouldn't have to Google to find possible known issues for a "retail and not beta" version of software. I guess I'm learning something new about software development. :-?

UPDATE
Well, I figured I would investigate the issue further so I did a modify install. Since I figured the problem to come from InCD I added the Photosnap install to my Nero 7. Well, Photosnap is the problem. It now won't let me import images from my scanner in Paint Shop Pro 9. The error I reported above comes up. I can't see why that should make a difference but it does. Add this to the list of BUGS your program creates. What a major disappointment to say the least. I sure hope Craig responds to this sooner than I expect a response from Nero support.

Well, it appears the 7.0.1.4 has fixed the problem with Paint Shop and my scanner. Thanks for that Craig. =D>

Man, I am a bit disappointed. 2 months of waiting and it still seems like the same gripes I have had are still there.

1) When encoding a large number of audio files, there is like 3-5 seconds hesitation before it moves on to the next file to encode (encoder to HE-AAC from Nero Burning Rom.)

2) The biggest reason I have dumped Nero 7 probably until a few more updates is the biggest gripe of all. When I navigate to my audio folder using Foobar or Winamp and I scroll to choose the song I want to hear, the pograms crash and disappear. Never did that using Nero 6 so I figure I would try to isolate it to make sure N7 i the culprit. Couple of reboots and tried to access the folders again, crash. Uninstalled N7 again and reinstalled N6 and wa la, no more crashes. I suspect its th Scout program. YUCK! Please include the option NOT to install.

3) Had the same problem as another poster using BackItUp with Nero refusing to recognize my DVDrs instead recognizing them as CDrs and then refusing to locate 2nd sets in the sessions.

4) When transcoding some mp3s to HE-AAC, the encoder hangs as if it has a problem with the mp3 file and after hitting cancel and waiting for 15 minutes, I can then delete the file and go on to the next encode. With N6, the same files that hiccupped on N& transcoded flawlessly on N6.

I am sure there are more but honestly, its just way too frustrating to go looking for the bugs since this wasnt ready for release either. Can we end the paid beta testing thing and hold off until the bugs are fixed. 2 months waiting for fixes that have turned out to not fix any of the problems I had before is completely disheartening. I dont mind the wait (well it sucked to wait 2 months) as long as the problems are fixed. In this case the long wait did nothing to alleviate my problems.

I have Nero 5.5 that I purchased retail. When Nero 6 Ultra was released, I kept hearing about bugs that it had and it would take awhile for them to be fixed. So, I never brothered to get version 6, I kept using 5.5. By the time Nero 6.6 came out, I was ready to buy it only to find out Nero 7 Ultra was coming out. So, at the end of October, I purchased Nero 7 Ultra retail. Then I started hearing about more problems with it, and an updated was planned, so I did not install it and just waited for the update. Well the update was released (7.012) and there were still bugs. So, I just kept waiting until now when the next update was released (7.014). So, now after about 2 months after I bought Nero 7 Ultra, I installed it.

First, I uninstalled version 5.5 and then used the Nero Clean tool. I then installed verson 7.0 and had some problems. It didn't auto start, I had to do it manually and then it stopped so I had to manually start it again. At the beginning, My name and Organization name was already filled in (left overt from Nero 5.5????), so I typed in the Nero 7 Ultra serial number and the installation finished ok.

I played around with the programs and was amazed how much has been changed from Nero 5.5. I downloaded the Update 7.014 and installed it 2 days later (last night). Twice during the install, I got an error that InCD 4.xxxx couldn't be found. Also, at the beginning, the text read "Nero 7 Demo" and again, the page listed my name, my organization, and the serial number.

After the install, I checked some of the programs, Nero Home had a blue screen design for version 7 and now it had a red screen design for version 7.014. When I ran Nero Express and Nero Burning Rom, I checked the menus (I wanted to know if I was running the full version or the "Demo" version). With Nero Burning Rom alot of the menu options are grayed out and under Help > about > the pop up window lists version 7.0.1.4, my name, company name, and no serial number.

I have no idea if I'm running the full version, or a demo version. I haven't tried to burning a CD-R or a DVD+R yet. Probably during the weekend. I have read other people are having the "demo" problem as well.

I posted this under another topic, but I had no reply, so here I go again:

I have WinXP, SP2. After I installed the Nero 7.0.1.4 update, I tried editing a DVD VR disk. Everything seemed to go well, but on playback, the menu froze. I tried this several times with several disks. The videos can be imported into Nero, but will not play back.

Nero 7 retail box version, and 7.01.2 do not have this problem. Indeed, I was able to create a playable DVD VR disk under those versions of Nero using the same disk and content that failed under 7.0.1.4

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Below is a copy of an email I sent to Nero technical support. Needless to say, I have had no reply.

I purchased a serial number for Nero Ultra 7. I installed 7.0.12 and all the appkications worked. After upgrading to 7.0.14, I cannot open Nero Vision. I receive the following warning: "Unable to load licensing subsystem. Please re-install the application." Nero Burning ROM does not issue such a message.

I have used the Nero 7 Clean Tool to clean up my system and then re-installed with no luck.

Please resolve this issue as soon as possible - as a paying customer I expect my programs to work. I also expect Nero to have a regular telephone number for contacting Technical Support.

Nero 7 is still Shite!

After NEVER receiving anything other than the same "canned" form message (7 times) to my original request for service, the new update to Nero 7 allowed me to finally install the software.

Now, I can do all of the things which I did with Nero 6 at half the speed !
Audio CD burns that worked fine at 42x with Nero 6 fail unless I burn at 16x. Nero Recode no longer works between two different drives.
This is the case on three different PC's

Was any of this disclosed before Nero accepted payment?
Of course not! - That would be too much like ethical behaviour!

Nero - your engineering is crap. Your marketting is deceitful, and you technical support is incompetent when it responds at all.

I have NEVER had a response to my request for a refund (after 50 days and multiple emails)

I haven't installed 7.014B although I have installed 7.014. In the last few days, I did some CD-R burning (my first with Nero 7) and I can say "screw ups". I copied a group of files on to a CD-R I made from Nero 5.5, during the burning process I got a message of "buffer underrun", and then "burning process failed at 40x". I checked the CD-R and some files copied ok, the rest weren't fully copied. I then had to do a second burn which copied the group of files that failed the first time and I overwrote those. I checked the CD-R again and all the new files were finally there (which of course used extra disc space). I wasn't sure if Nero 7 didn't like the disc bacause it was made by version 5.5, but with this burn the disc was pretty much full so I started a new one for the next project.

I had a group of folders with files that I wanted to burn on a new disk. I figured since this is a brand new disc Nero 7.014 shouldn't have a problem with it. I burned the entire group of files (about 100MB) - and sure enough, I got the same errors "buffer underrun" and "burning process failed". I checked the disc and a small amount of the files were copied ok with bad copies/not fully copied over with the majority of the files. So, I had to do several burns of small groups of files (11 to 25 files) in order to copy the entire amount over with some files been copied 2 or 3 times in order to fully copy over. In the end, I used about twice the disc space as originally needed. Untill I get this fixed, I can't burn anything.

There's also another problem that I think might be caused by Nero 7. I was playing a music (retail) CD using Winamp 5 and had that going in the background. I was web surfing in the forground. At some point my mouse pointer was frozen onscreen. If I moved my mouse, the pointer would not move. When I started clicking on both the right and left buttons, I found out that mouse pointer was invisiblibly moving around on the screen however the mouse pointer icon was frozen and therefore not moving. The only thing I could do to fix this was to press the reset button.

I continued where I left off and sometime later the same thing happened (with the same CD). I figured it might have something to do with that particular CD so I took it out. On another occassion I played another music CD and under the same circumstances the same thing happened. This happened sometime after I installed Nero 7. It never happened before Nero 7, so I think Nero 7 might be causing this problem.

Morpheus, bad idea to use multisession discs that span different engines.

My advice, stay away from multisession and InCD. Both are unreliable.

Buffer overrun in Visual C++ runtime library using Nero 7

PostPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2006 7:46 pm
by rudyschatz
Latest info on buffer overrun error. When installing nero7-b over nero6-18 I get the overrun error when burning disks. When I use the general clean tool to get rid of nero6 & then install nero7 everything works fine, I can burn data, audo, & DVDs without the error occuring. However when I restart my computer nero7 has the buffer overrun in visual c++ runtime library occuring
The error occurs when finished writing disks I cannot erase or get info from disks without the error occuring. I have to go back to nero6 to erase the disks that I wrote with nero7. I tried to eliminate everthing in my startup programs but nothing works.
I cannot give you a log file since the program crashes when this happens.

I say again that none of this happens when I go back to nero 6.0.0.18 It works like a charm.

Rudy Schatz

PS; This happens with both the demo & my legal copy

First Issue

Craig, HPDV1000 laptop. XP Pro SP2, 2GHZ Pentium M, 1GB RAM, 5400 RPM 80GB HD... standard Synaptics Touchpad Drivers from Synaptics site.

1) Installed 7.0.1.4b
2) Rebooted
3) At windows desktop popup was displayed that indicated that due to a change in the registry windows was using default MS drivers instead of Synaptics drivers.
4) Only thing that changed in my system the last 2 months was installing Nero 7.

Second Issue

Also have another issue to report with 7.0.1.4b. Desktop, 3.6GHZ P4 w/HT, 1GB RAM, XP Pro SP2, Plextor rev 1 708A FW 1.11.... burning audio discs, haven't tried others

1) First audio disc burns fine
2) Try to burn second audio disc via normal process i.e. new disc dialog
3) Write process starts... then get a failure message due to invalid drive state
4) Can't eject disc but can close app
5) Have to reboot to get disc out of drive
6) Have to reboot another time to be able to burn another disc

I should mention that I burned 8 data discs and backed up 2 movies with Recode, no issues.
