Nero 7.0.1.4 / BackItUp

PostPosted: Tue Dec 13, 2005 10:52 pm

Craig,
I just downloaded the updated version of Nero 7.0.1.4 to see if BackItUp 2.0.0.6 works for restoring my back up data I backed up with older version 6.6.0.0. Please take a look at the image I attached. This is basically recurring issue I saw in 7.0.0.0 which are:

1) Disk is recognized as CR-ROM instead of DVD 4.7. Not only indicating CD-ROM but progress indicator seems to show the media is CD-R. (Size is 647MB, this is the end of 1st disk process.)

2) At the end of 1st disk restoration process, basically, the program keeps showing the same message, "Nero Back up image...does not exist."
and I have to manually end the program from Windows Task Manager.

3) After the above message are shown, there is no further progress.

Looking forward to your insights on this.

Hi Ken,

When you use the 'Verify Backup' option you find under Wizards in BackItUP 2, what does it report about the backup?

Craig

Hi Craig,
Attached image shows the result of what you mentioned. I was using the same HDD from which I backed up data amd HDD was empty.

Thanks,

Hi Ken,

Looks like your post caught the attention of our Team in Germany. :-)

I did say that they monitor this and other forums after all. They sent me an Email asking that I get more information on your issue here so that they can investigate this issue ASAP.

They would like to get the following information if you do not mind...

- OS (XP SP?)
- Model of Burner and firmware version
- Any log files? Or InfoTool Log?
- backed up to what exactly? (CD-R, DVD-R, etc. and how many discs did the backup take. Or ImageDrive/Images?)
- S-ATA or P-ATA hard Disc? What type of Hard Drive was used?

And they want to know if they understood the below correctly.

- You backed up 233GB from the HDD to ???? (DVD, CD, ImageDrive?)
- You tried to restore to the same HDD from ???( DVD, CD, ImageDrive?)
- After the first disc was restored, BIU hangd with the written message you indicated below?

Last:

Normally a resotre of Partition will start over the Linux BIU-Recover-CD/DVD (did you boot from the first disc for the restore process?), but this is missing in the context you provided.

Thanks for any feedback Ken.

Craig

Craig, Here is some information I hope helpful.

- OS (XP SP?)

A: XP SP2

- Model of Burner and firmware version

A: NEC ND 3500AG (FW ver. 2.1A) For restoration
NEC ND 2500A (Unknown version) For Burn

- Any log files? Or InfoTool Log?
A: I will attatch it at next post shortly.

- backed up to what exactly? (CD-R, DVD-R, etc. and how many discs did the backup take. Or ImageDrive/Images?)

A:27 DVD+RWs

- S-ATA or P-ATA hard Disc? What type of Hard Drive was used?
A: P-ATA

And they want to know if they understood the below correctly.

- You backed up 233GB from the HDD to ???? (DVD, CD, ImageDrive?)

A: I recall 233GB is actual total disk size of 250GB. Backed up data is bit less than 150GB

- You tried to restore to the same HDD from ???( DVD, CD, ImageDrive?)

A: DVD

- After the first disc was restored, BIU hangd with the written message you indicated below?

A: Yes, I can not do anything other than forcing to stop the program

Last:

Normally a resotre of Partition will start over the Linux BIU-Recover-CD/DVD (did you boot from the first disc for the restore process?), but this is missing in the context you provided.

A: I am not sure about this one. Is there any special disc 1 other than the disc burnt as disc1? I started from first disc, I thought it was, because it was labeled as disc1.

Thanks for your support and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Ken,

Sorry, I've been out of action for the past week with the flu, and it looks like its going to be a few more days before I can get back to work. As soon as I beat this into submission, I'll get back to your issues with BIU.

Sorry for the delay.

Craig

Craig,

Thanks for your continuous attention. Regarding the new version released a couple days ago, there was no fix for this particular issue, am I correct?
Considering the timing of what you mentioned about your team in Germany having started to look into this issue, and date of the new version released, I did not think the fix was included in this update, but just in case...

Ken

Meant to have been fixed or ...?

Thanks for your support.

I just download the newest version of Nero, released a couple days ago and tried the same thing, but it still has the same identical issue. I just wanted to ask if this has been fixed and I still have the same issue or this issue has not have been touched for resolution at all...

Hi KEN2,

I've just completed a restore of a Nero 6.6 backup using the latest Nero BackItUp version 2.2.1.1 that comes with Nero 7.2.0.3b, and it restored wihtout any problems.

One thing I noticed in the Postings, you have a screenshot showing a Drive Image restore, but the only way to restore a Partition backup is by booting to the first disc and following the DOS prompts for restore.

So if you use Nero 6.6 to do File Backups, then you can use Nero 7 to restore them. I've confirmed this in numerous testing today.

If you do a Drive Image backup, then the only way to restore it would be too boot to the first disc and use the DOS interface to do the restore. Nero 7 has nothing to do with this process, as it's all selfcontained on the backup discs.

Craig

DRIVE IMAGE BACKUP BY BACKITUP

Thanks for your reply.

Yes you are right I am trying to restore drive image from 27 DVDs which was backed up with Nero 6.6. As I mentioned in the previous emails, I was trying to restore by booting up from 1st disc but it did not work properly and therefore I was seeking improved BackItUp program. when Nero 7 came out I had a much hope because newer version will take care of restoration process with Windows base interface, but not from DosPrompt program, which I did not have any luck. If you need further information, which I posted most of them here, please let me know. I am more than happy to provide you with what I have been through.

Hi KEN2,

Ahh, I see. Well, it's been a while since I read this, so my memory is rocky.

And no, Nero 7 bootable recovery disc will not work with Nero 6.

But I did a test with Nero 6 as well, where I created two Drive Image backups from two different systems. Then I swapped the first disc of each backup and tried to use them to restore the others drive backup, and this did not work. So it's not just an issue of getting Nero 7 boot recovery disc to work with Nero 6. It's a case of each Nero 6 or Nero 6 Boot recovery disc will only work with their related recovery disc sets.

Craig

I understand that Nero 7.0 bootable back up feature is not compatible for data backed up with 6.0, but how about Window's based program on 7.0. I thought 7.0 can restore HD backup data with Windows based program without rebooting and moving to DOS base. Please see this entire thread for problem I have been having. I recall one time my post got attention to Nero people in Germany, and I was having more hope, though...

Hi Ken,

No, Nero 7 now boots to a Linux to do the Restore, instead of DOS as Nero 6 did.

And our Engineers were checking to see if your issue was similar to one reported by an OEM, as they sounded similar. So we were hoping this would be the case and the next release of Nero 6 would have resolved the issue. It did for the OEMs, but obviously not for you. :-?

And restoring with Windows, was only ever planned to be supported when you do File backups, not Partition Backups.

Sorry.

Craig

Craig,

Thanks for sicking with me on this Backitup issue.

As you suggested that 7.0 has nothing to do with restoring Disk restoration made with 6.0, I went back to basics and tried one more time with Nero 6.0 Backitup (Nrestore 1.083) (No luck!)

In the thread linked below, we discussed mysterious message I got from Nrestore 1.083 after 3rd disk finished. Although total data disk was 26 DVD, the restoration was forcibly ended after 3rd disc finished with the mysterious message "Create New Structures: 50%" as well as system requesting to reboot. Although Backitup program was updated several times during 2005, there was no update for Nrestore which was being 1.083. (That was the reason I was rushing into 7.0, which was wrong direction for me, according to you, Craig)

There was no comment from Nero team about this mysterious message, and I was wondering if this is something that no solution was ever found.
(It seems at least there is one more person having same problem I saw on the thread, so I beleive this is not only my issue.)

I just want to know if the above issue was ever discussed and resolved...
