I haven't heard a peep from Nero 8 so I'm taking all this with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, Amazon and Play.com have Nero 8 listed with ship dates of September 26th and 28th, respectively.

Well, if I recall correctly Nero 7 came out retail about a month before it was available online. Regardless, not rushing to get this one. I've been a Nero user since v3.x... v7.x never got the bugs out so I am no hurry to get v8.

I don't know what kind of features they could add to version 8. Unless it can babysit my kids and wash my car, I'll pass on it.

Well, it said that it was for editing and burning HD video.
So I'll get it with my Blu-ray DVD+RW drive on Black Friday! :D

...and to think that when I actually burn stuff in Windows now, I still use my (legit!) copy of Nero 6.

To a degree, that's already in Nero 7.

Hey, Wiz, I'd buy you a version 8 when they come out,
but I'm afraid that you'd be complaining about FedEx being slow with it! :D

Hmm...., guess I'm not aware of that.
Of course, with neither (1) a Blu-ray or HD DVD burner, nor (2) a source of HD, 720p or 1080i, material to edit and burn,
there wasn't an incentive for me to see whether or not Nero 7 had some related capability.

Can users and owners of Nero 7 have free upgrade to Nero8 or you have to pay for it?.

I'm sure that we will have to pay, like for 5 to 6 and then 6 to 7.
That's the difference between the number junp and updates within Nero 7 is that updates within the number are free.

Probably if you bought Nero 7 in the last few weeks, but foolish me bought it when it was released... I based my purchase on the history that Nero had (from v3 to v6.x)... you know, writing decent software... Anyway, I got an promo e-mail from them at the end of August that if I give them $50.00 now I can get all the great features (and since v7, I refer to those features as bugs) for $49.99... Here is what I get:
As a loyal Nero user, we want to offer you the opportunity to pre-order Nero 8
at a substantial savings of $49.99.

Nero 8 introduces the newly-designed Nero StartSmart user interface, which maximizes user efficiency with a one-stop solution for creating and managing digital media projects. The new and improved Nero 8 software allows users to upload videos and share content on YouTube™, MySpace® and My Nero with a simple one-click solution.

Nero 8 Highlights
• NEW easy-to-use and intuitive Nero StartSmart
• One click import and share to/from online communities
• Play AVCHD and Blu-ray (BD-AV) video
• Backup files to CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs
• Convert DVD files to play on your iPod® or PSP™ and
other portable devices
• Optimized for Windows Vista™ and much more...

I can't wait to see the new improved SmartStart... Oh wait, I never saw the old one because I did not use it! ](*,) Stick with Nero 7 and look past this release or use ImgBurn. Proof that things are better without the bloat.

I was in Fry's Electronics, in Washington state, yesterday, and they already have Nero 8 on the shelves ($20 mail-in upgrade rebate). Fry's must have broken the street date or something.

I may pass on this, because Nero 7 is working fine for me, and I don't really see any benefit in upgrading.

I'm sure hox will have it soon too if you know what I mean.

It looks like Nero 8 will eventually support Blu-ray playback but you will need to buy an extra plugin.

http://www.nero.com/eng/showpress.php?id=1313

Nero, leaders in digital media technology, today announced that Nero 8 users will be able to playback their favorite movies in Blu-ray (BD-ROM) disc format in a future update of Nero 8.

No word on HD DVD support.

Yes, I do know what you mean! [-X

Maybe I'll wait until Fry's has it with $20 off, and double MIRs for about $20 AMIRs.

Just saw this at Best Buy 2day (full version only, no $20 rebate). So much for October release date.

I think this happened with Nero 7 as well-- Fry's had it REALLY early with a fairly big rebate, and it turned out it was an insanely buggy version they had to ship to make promised (to the stores) ship date.

I think I'll wait for when I can get it free AMIR, like I did with 7 (which I think was only the first Black Friday after release at Best Buy). I still have never installed 7, seems nutty to spend any money on 8 at this point.

In Europe, they're offering a free upgrade to Vers. 8 if you buy Nero 7 this month. The upgrade from Nero 6 is < 40 Euros, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to have a bit of flexibility- use Nero 7 until Nero 8 is ripe enough.

Mind you, Nero 6 does pretty well everything I want as a burning app. Are the additional components (Nero Vision etc) worth looking into?

They've got that in the US too. I'm not sure how much the upgrade is from Nero 6, but it will cost $50 to upgrade from Nero 7.

I'll go to 8 for $20, AMIRs, but not $50.

A wise choice, as IMO Nero hasn't made a good version since 6.6.x.

Too much bloat, too many extra worthless features that I either wouldn't use or would slow down my machine, and too many bugs. I'm glad I never had to deal with all the Nero 7.x experiences I read about here.

I can only hope Ahead goes back to its roots with version 8 and remembers what made versions 5 and 6 successful.

It's gonna be bloat*10! I think I heard the download was going to be over 500MB. I'll have to confirm with my friend who picked it up at retail, but I thought he said it came on a DVD-ROM.
