I'm having this problem for a month now, i have nero 5.5.9.17, and a Toshiba DVD rom SD-R2002 burner that comes with my hp pavilion n5470 laptop. The burner was able to burn cd fine for a year, but since a month or so ago, the burner stop working. Every time i tried burn a data/music cd it give the following problem

I uninstall the nero and install again, it still give me the same problem, so i format my computer with the recovery cd given by hp, restored back into original condition, then i was able to burn the first cd, then when i tried to burn the second cd it give the same problem again. So i reformat the computer, and it still give me problem when tried to burn the second cd. Anybody got a clue why this error is happening, when i burn there's nothing active except nero, and i burn at the lowest speed possible 2x, but the buffer level just drop to 32 % when it just about to write. Is this problem cause by software, is it just my burner is broken. Thanks

Do you have any trouble reading discs with the drive, or just burning?

i have no problem reading regular discs from the drive, the only problem is burning the cd using any kind of software, so far i have tried nero, easy creator, and direct cd, all of them won't let me burn anything, for easy cd creator it give me buffer underrun error, and for direct cd it give me the files not there when i tried to burn the cd. I have this problem over a month now, i have been trying to get hp to take this in for service, they however keep deny it, saying the problem is software, the strangest part of tihs problem after format the hard drive, i install either nero or easy creator it will allow me to burn the first cd successfully however after that it just won't let me burn cd anymore. Anybody got a clue is this software, or is just my burner gone bad? thanks

If it wasn't for the fact that you can burn one disc successfully after reformatting, I would say it sounds like a hardware problem.

You haven't changed brands of blank CD-R, have you? What brand and speed of CD-R are you using, and does the same thing happen with all brands? The problem didn't start when you upgraded to 5.5.9.17, did it?

I did a little more research. Looking at the support page for the SD-R2102 (is that what you meant to say, or is yours an even older model?) I don't see any buffer underrun protection listed as a feature of this drive:

http://www.toshiba.com/taissdd/products ... Over.shtml

Combine that with the buffer underrun error you report when using Easy CD Creator, and now it sounds to me like maybe your problems really are buffer underruns - which probably are software related.

Do you have any anti-virus software running? Try disabling it, and any other non-essential tasks that may be running. Is your computer attached to a network, or has it ever been?

Do you have DMA enabled?

i have an older version 2102, it's 2002 with no buffer underrun protection, i disable the startup program, so the only program, task that's running when window start is explorer, my laptop is connect a lan network, but i doubt that's the problem, and my dma is enable. The reason why hp is keep denying me service is because of what you said buffer underrun is a software issue. However i format the computer by using the restore cd given by hp, then the only program i installed is just one of the burning software, roxio or nero. Then i can burn first cd, and the second cd just won't burn. The brand of cd i have been using to tried it are imation, pny, and phillips, their speed ranged from 16x to 24x, and the max burn speed i used is always 2x, and it all give me the same error. Actually the program i used for a while was roxio easy cd creator 5.0 platinum, then when the problems start, i talk to hp service then told me to try other burning software, so after i reformat i switch to nero, and it still does same thing, able to burn the first cd, then the second cd fails. I just don't understand what's wrong with burner.

What happens when you simulate a burn in Nero? And have you tried a write transfer rate test using CD Speed (in the Nero Tookit folder)? Also, although this is completely counter-intuitive, have you tried burning at higher speeds?

when i simulate a burn in nero or test burn in roxio easy creator it's all successful, until when it begin to write, then the burner just stop responding, then it just give me write error, or buffer underrun, and i have a slow burner, the max speed is 4x, and i have tried to burn at that speed, but it still give me the same problem. i just did the test i have no idea what result meant, but it didn't give me any error message

You ran the read transfer test. To run the write transfer test you need to put a blank CD-R in the drive before starting the test. Otherwise the procedure is the same.

As for the simulation, if you consistently get buffer underruns when doing a real burn, you ought to get them while simulating also. Thus, the successful simulation is further evidence to support your contention that this isn't a buffer underrun problem caused by software problems.

Looking at all the evidence you have presented here, it seems to me that you have put together a pretty good case for this not being a software issue. Why don't you summarize all this and press your case with HP again, but this time push harder for them to service your computer/drive?

Did you try disabling DMA for the recorder? Roxio has been know to cause buffer underruns when DMA mode is selected for slower recorders.

i just did a write transfer test with a blank cd-r, however it give me the following error:
General Information

Operating System Windows ME
Drive TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2002
Firmware Version 1029
Serial Number
Disc Audio CD

[18:12:13] Error - INVALID COMMAND OPERATION CODE (052000)

any idea what that error is?
as for disabling dma, i tried that before it still give me the same write/buffer underrun error.

For a month now, i've been tried to get hp to take this in service, however they keep telling me that this is software relate, and the fact i can burn the first cd after format, and can't burn after that is just something they never heard of it. I describe to them all of the things i went through try to determine whether it's software problem or not, but they just keep telling me if it's buffer under run, it's software issue. It really frustrate me, that i have to take the laptop to some store to get fix, despite i have warranty.

I don't know what that specific error is, but I presume it is related to the same problem that keeps you from actually writing a disc.

It sounds like you have been quite reasonable in working with HP in trying to pin down this problem to software or hardware. You've tried multiple burning programs, multiple system configurations, and even wiped the system clean several times and performed full reinstalls. I'm not sure what more they could ask of a customer (by the way isn't "customer service" supposed to mean giving service to the customer, not getting service from the customer?)

The testing you have done lends a lot of weight to the argument that this is a hardware problem. So, even if in the end it isn't a hardware problem, I think it is time to pursue that avenue and HP ought to do their fair share now - that isn't an unreasonable request under these circumstances. A quick swap-out of the drive on their end should clear up a lot of questions.

Why don't you give this thread a couple more days to see if anyone else can come up with a solution for you? If not, then if I were you I wouldn't feel bad about calling HP and telling them that the drive has taken a turn for the worse and won't burn at all under any circumstances, even after a clean system reinstallation. I don't generally advocate being untruthful, but it sounds like you have bent over backwards to accommodate HP and now you need to do what you need to do in order to get them to live up to their part of the bargain.

thanks for all the help cfitz, i have been tried to figure out what this problem is for a month now, hp service was not really helpful, every time i told them the error from easy creator is buffer underrun, they immediately told me they can't do anything, it's software. Despite the fact i tell them that i ran serveral system format and install different burn program, still the problem persist. Also because i told them the strange problem after format the hard drive i can burn the initial cd, then i cannot burn after that. They said since you can burn the first cd, it must meant it's software, and they won't help me after that. Looks right now, the only two options i have is either to tell them that the drive won't even burn at all, or pay someone to take look at it.

Have you tried uninstalling the drive from device manager and then allowing the system to detect it and reinstall it? I wonder if that would have the same effects as completely reinstalling the operating system. Obviously you don't want uninstall-reinstall the drive every time you burn a disc, but trying it once might give some more insight.

Have you tried talking to Toshiba? Maybe they might be helpful, although there is a good chance they will tell you the drive is OEM so you have to go to HP for support.

i have try install and reinstall cd-rom drive, still give me the same problem, i doubt toshiba will help me, since the burner came with the hp laptop.

Soweird, it occurs to me that if you have completely erased the system, performed a clean reinstall from HP's recovery disk, and haven't added any additional software after the reinstall, then you have restored the system to its as-delivered state. I don't see how HP could possibly deny you warranty service for a system that doesn't work in the state that it was delivered to you. Fight them on this one - I think you are in the right.
