CD-RW doesn't like Nero and SVCD's

This is a norcent 48x12x48x CD-rw drive. It works great on burning audio cd's, data cd's, even VCD's.
However, when it came time for me to burn some SVCD's on it, this thing just sucks.
I use mode/2 DAO in Nero, and although the CD burns perfectly fine, the CD is unreadable by all devices. In windows xp, it gives a error message "disc maybe corrupt".
I then downloaded the SVCD test file from vcdhelp.com and used a different, more expensive 700MB CD-r.
The same results. Dead CD, totally dead. I finally got desperate and changed the mode to mode/2 TAO. Bingo! It works! CD's are readable and the such.
BUT, most of the SVCD's I create require overburning. TAO cannot overburn. This cd-rw burns everything else (data DAO, etc.) perfect, so it obviously can do DAO. Any suggestions?
