OK, I can understand that for marketing reasons Ahead has to respond to Roxio's 6 by releasing Nero 6. However, if support for Nero 5.x is discontinued, and the upgrade from 5.x to 6 is not free, there will be a lot of angry consumers (count me in). :x

looking at ahead's website:
https://secure.nero.com/en/Secure.asp
upgrade from 4.0 to 5.5: $19 for serial number, $39+$9 for CD.

also, download page, choosing Nero Burning Rom / Updates until v 5.0, you can see that they don't upgrade between 3 and 4, 4 and 5.

so it is unlikely that they'll offer a free upgrade from 5.0 or 5.5 to 6.0.

You are probably right, which makes a good argument for anyone considering purchase of a 5.5 license to hold off until 6.0 is released. Perhaps that is why Ahead didn't want information about 6.0 displayed here.

Bummer, I just purchased Nero 5.5 last month too!!

Oh well, hopefully the upgrade to 6.0 is worth it, and not too expensive 8)

Of course, we are just speculating based on past behavior. Ahead might do things differently this time. And you never know, they may offer free upgrades for recent purchasers of 5.5, even if not for the general population of 5.5 users. We will just have to wait and see. Still, I wouldn't count on a free upgrade, so if anyone is considering the purchase of a license but hasn't yet, I would still recommend waiting if possible.

I can't comment on what the upgrade policy for Nero 5.5 to Nero 6.0 will be, or if there will be an upgrade policy. As I do not make this decision, and I honestly do not know what the policy may be till just before Nero 6.0x is released. :(

We have been working on Nero 6 for some time, and expect to release it in the Summer. The information that was recently posted concerning Nero 6, was not supposed to be published. It was mistakenly posted by our Publishers, who jumped the gun a little. Which is why we requested it to be removed.

As for taking a shot at Roxio. They are not the only software developers in the game, so we are really taking a shot at them all when this comes out.

We have to compete with Roxio, and other developers, but we do not wish to follow. We prefer to lead the way. And being the first out with a new release is not necessarily leading, especially if there are any bugs. :D So we take the time needed to make sure it's as solid as we can make it before we release it.

Regards,

Craig
