Help - Illegal Request Error Occurred

PostPosted: Wed Mar 12, 2003 12:03 pm

I recently installed a Cannon digital camera solution disk that includes utilities Zoombrowser EX, RAW image Recorder and Camera TWAIN Driver 3.9/4.1. Shortly thereafter, in an attempt to save some digital images, InCD failed at formatting a CD-RW disk. I have been unable to solve the problem About 3 mins into formatting it stops and I get the following message:

00a8-0005-0021-0000
Illegal Request Error Occurred
Reboot Your System or Drive and Try Again
Insert a New Disk

My InCD version is 3.14.0, and I tried upgrading to V3.5.22, but it did not solve the problem. Tried uninstalling and installing both the Cannon software and the entire Nero suite, but again to no avail. Same error message. Am running Win2k.

On other error that has been happening simultaneously with my efforts to fix this is, upon rebooting, I get a window that opens with the header "c:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe" and two little System Error windows that open with message, "unable to open dialog"

Any help would be much, much, much appreciated.

I presume that your problem is not media-related (e.g., failures on a single disc, or on discs of poor quality, such as Memorex CD-RW).

I am not familiar with your Cannon software, but apparently it conflicts with InCD. Does it include any burning program or plugin? What is this RAW image Recorder? Go through the Cannon utilities to see if any of them is related to CD burning.

First, you should get Nero and InCD running on a relatively clean system. Hence remove the Cannon software for now. If you don't have the serial number for Nero (e.g., after an upgrade from an OEM version), run Start | Run | regedit and copy the serial number listed in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning ROM\Info\Serialx

Then remove Nero and InCD (and InCDUDF Reader or EasyWrite Reader if they are listed in Add/Remove Programs), and install the latest versions of Nero 5.5.10.15a and InCD 3.52.20b.

If InCD starts working, you may try to install the Cannon utilities one by one, checking whether InCD continues to operate after each install. This might indicate which utility conflicts with InCD.

On the other hand, if InCD fails even without the Cannon software, much more information will be needed for troubleshooting, as indicated in the guide

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php ... adid=64787

In particular, save the report of Nero InfoTool to a file, and post the Driver Information section here (to save space, remove the paragraphs for Microsoft drivers).

As for your startup messages, take a look at what is listed in Start | Programs | Startup and in the following registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thanks for your note. I have now tried various combos of installing and uninstalling the various programs. Trying now with only the Nero and InCD software loaded. Same problem. I can burn data or audio to a cd-r just fine, but still can't format the CD-RW. Same message as above. Perplexing, as I have been formatting CD-RWs and backing up files on them for months without a problem until loading the camera software. Hmmm.

With the newest version of Nero I did find a way to get the Infotool Configuration report. Which sections would be most helpful to you for viewing...its long and I just don't want to take up too much space.

Thanks in advance for your continued help.

Again, are you sure your problem is not media-related? Are you trying to format fresh discs of the same brand as used previously, or re-using them after full-erase in Nero?

Did you find out what was causing those error startup messages? They did indicate that the Cannon software was not removed properly, and hence might point to offending remnants.

Did you check if any Cannon utility was related to CD burning?

Again, please answer the querries Q1 through Q10 in the InCD guide

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php ... adid=64787

In particular, we need a suitable extract from Nero InfoTool report (click the diskette button to save it to a file), especially the Driver Information section. To save space, only Microsoft drivers and those nonrelated to CD burning (e.g., modem, scanner, etc) may be skipped.

In general, please report all details; otherwise we may need (too) many iterations. 8)

colonwk,

I have a Canon A40 with the ZoomBrowser (3.5.1.8), PhotoEdit (1.60 b12) and the WIA driver (for Windows ME/XP). (The TWAIN driver is for 98/2000, I have XP Home.) I do not have the RAW image converter installed as the A40 model does not produce images in RAW format.

I'm using Ahead Nero (5.5.10.7) and InCD (3.5.20.0) for my Memorex 52x,24x,52x.

I'm formatting a crummy Memorex CD-RW, 12x, (wish I would have read the above before I bought these) as I type. Hang on for a minute.

While waiting, I don't like the packet burning for long time photo storage and archival. I use it only for temporary storage and redundant backup. After each D/L from the camera into a new folder, I immediately backup that newest folder and the previous folder to a CD-R with a multi-session burn. I rotate between to CD-Rs, so on the next D/L, I BU to the 2nd CD-R the newest and the previous. That way I've got 2 of everything but the newest on two CD-Rs. With each D/L I also BU to the CD-RW, so that I've got 2 copies of the newest, one on CD-R and one on CD-RW. Make sense?

Wow, I think that I used that CD-RW to an image burn out a Dantz Retrospect disaster recovery image. Really taking a long time to format.

Test Results: I did a drag & drop copy (3 photos, JPEG) from the folder that they were D/L to from the camera. Everything went well. Note: The folder was "Registered" in the ZoomBrowzer database, but I don't think that affects anything. Note: The photos are on a logical partition, not a primary bootable one, but I don't think that affects anything.

Try doing the above and note the conditions and each step for me.

I have somehow, with your help, partially fixed the problem. Part of it may have been Media Related. I think I may have destroyed my previous CD-RWs by ejecting InCD improperly. I went thru the 10 step guide.

(1) upgraded firmware (2) Bought (yet more) CD-RWs: Samsung (3) tried 10X guaranteed (4) N/A (5) N/A (6) Am using TDK VeloCD 32/10/40B that is supported by InCD and did completely clean uninstall and reinstall with software, upgraded to latest Nero and InCD versions off the site and uninstalled the Cannon package (7) downloaded manuel (8) Checked infotool and burner does not support CD-MRW and the following KEY paragraph for my situation. == "Finally, a big WARNING: Always Eject from the InCD icon or Explorer; using the recorder's eject button may spoil the disc! Ejecting via the button may seem to work, but if InCD doesn't finish properly, data will be lost (possibly later because some structural information is corrupted)." The "possibly later" in my case was extremely important. I have been backing up on these Memorex CD-RWs for months. Dumb-ass that I was destroying them slowly each time. (9) N/A and (10) According to InfoTool my autorun is on. I assume it should stay that way if InCD continues to work. (11) I uninstalled WMP and found the Adaptec Plugin to get rid of. That may have helped.

The rest of (11) is a bit above my knowledge level though a couple things caught my attention: (1) If I do start / run / cmd that same window pops up that is coming up now everytime I reboot - no idea what that is, and (2) I didn't much understand all the info about cleaning registries, lower filters, etc, but if someone could provide some more info about finding and getting rid of conflicting drivers I would much appreciate it. As I am semi-sure this is part of the problem I am having. Sounds like WinAmp and RealOne are safest and won't install conflicting drivers. Is that correct?

What do you mean by "partially fixed the problem"? Why only partially? Without knowing more, it's hard to guess what should be done next.

Apparently you misread "Q1 through Q10" as "S1 through S10" in my former post (these querries were listed in S18 of the guide). Well, I can see why you got bogged down at S11, but please read S12 through S18 as well. BTW, Memorex CD-RW media have quite bad reputation.

Concerning your latest post, which version of WMP did you have? Did you really uninstall WMP, or just the Adaptec plugin? Whatever you did, don't reinstall WMP for now. After your current problems are resolved, we may talk about reinstalling WMP 7.1 or 9.0 without the Adaptec plugin, or WinAmp, or some version of RealOne.

Running Start | Run | cmd opens a Command Prompt window, in which you can type commands such as "dir" or "cd C:\Winnt" (without the quotes); you close the window by typing "exit" and Enter (see Windows Help).

To find out why a cmd window opens at startup, click Start | Programs | Startup; if you see any entries there, right-click each of them and select Properties to see where this program or batch file is located (General | Location). Tell us their names and locations, because they might indicate which Canon utility installed them. (You may delete these entries later.) Secondly, run Start | Run | regedit, click on suitable + signs in the left pane to expand branches until you find the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and click on "Run" to see what startup programs are listed in the right pane. Instead of writing them down, you may export this key to a .reg file (click File | Export...), which you may edit and post here.

Don't worry if you don't understand everything in S11. To see which parts of S11 are relevant in your case, we must get more info.

So repeating from my former post, please answer the querries Q1 through Q10 in the InCD guide (as much as you can; if you don't understand something, just ask).

In particular, we need a suitable extract from Nero InfoTool report (click the diskette button to save it to a file), especially the Driver Information section. To save space, only Microsoft drivers and those nonrelated to CD burning (e.g., modem, scanner, etc) may be skipped.

KCK Trouble shoot Post wrote:I don't know if MusicMatch Juke Box conflicts with InCD.

KCK,

As noted in my previous post, above, I've experienced no conflicts between my Canon S/W and InCD (Windows XP Home (SP1) OS). I've also used MusicMatch JB Plus (+$20) to make CD-Audios on CD-Recordables. None of these S/W packages interfere with each other here.

I offer this not in the expectation that it will help you to diagnose the subject problem. I offer it as evidence that these things can all work properly in the presence of each other. Or, perhaps, I am just lucky.

CowboySlim:

Thanks very much for the interesting info.

Concerning MusicMatch, recently a W2K user uninstalled it to get InCD working; since other changes were made at the same time, it's hard to say whether it mattered, but its driver MxLW2k.sys looked suspicious. This will be mentioned in the revised InCD guide for W2K.

Things may be different under XP, especially with more recent versions of MusicMatch. Since I'm not running MusicMatch, your help in clarifying this issue would be valuable. So first, tell us which version of MusicMatch you are running. Second, if you aren't too busy, please post the Driver Information section extracted from Nero InfoTool report (click the diskette button to save it to a file). You may omit Microsoft drivers to save space, but even the whole file may be posted. Third, it might be interesting to see if MusicMatch puts any drivers into UpperFilters or LowerFilters (it did under W2K). To this end, running regedit, you could inspect what is listed in the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

or use File | Export... to produce a file that can be posted. Alternatively it might be easier to run the utility from

http://www.bustrace.com/products/devfilter.htm

As for the Canon software, your utilities and OS differ from colonwk's. The manual for Zoombrowser EX doesn't mention CD recording. I couldn't find anything on colonwk's RAW Image Recorder and Camera TWAIN Driver. Since colonwk didn't specify the camera model, it's impossible to check Canon's site. Do you feel that Canon might be including some CD recording software with their latest cameras?

Thanks for your patience.

Partially fixed in that I have succeeded in formatting and backing up files to a CD-RW. I have not yet reloaded the camera software, which I will do in a logical order, testing the ability to format and write along each step of the way.

I have to get to work now, but I spent some time following your instructions. Have looked at the startup, the registry and the infotool report. Just a few questions in an effort to save both space here and your time.

From the Infotool report - do you need to see only the Drivers section? I wasn't clear from your last note, should I delete all Microsoft drivers and Non-Burning related drivers?

Also you mentioned editing the registry report. Is there a way I can clean that up or just send as is. Its not long.

Before I post I will look through and answer the other questions from your prior post.

I will not be able to get back to this until later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks,
Bill

Glad to hear that at least InCD is working now! :P

Before reloading the camera software, it might be useful to see what rubbish it left behind.

In general, it's better to provide too much info rather than too little, since it's much easier to skip irrelevant details instead of guessing. So take your time to describe your startup findings carefully. Don't worry too much about space. E.g., if any batch files (.bat) files are run at startup, you may list their contents. Well, even if you posted a lot, I could tell you what might be deleted afterwards (you can edit prior posts) to save the forum space!

From Nero InfoTool report, we only need the Driver Information section. Just delete all Microsoft drivers, but post the rest, since who knows what the Canon software might have installed.

The "Run" registry export may be posted in full.

And don't forget the remaining querries. In addition, tell us how you connect the camera - via USB 1.1, USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394/FireWire? You might inspect the Canon CD to see whether it installs additional USB or FireWire drivers.

KCK:

I printed your instructions and I'll get to it.

In the meantime, I've looked at the Canon CD, Readme, etc. I see nothing that would lead me to think that they are dumping CD recording S/W into my computer. Also, I have the Canon i850 printer, see nothing there, either. Incidentally, they also include the camera D/L and photo organizer, database Zoombrowser and the PhotoRecord S/W on the printer CD. As those are later versions of those on my camera CD, it is those that I'm currently using. But again, I can't see as they affect the CD-RW function.

Here is a slightly easier way to check your filters: open Registry Editor (Start | Run | regedit) and use Edit | Find... to search for "lowerfilters" (without the quotes); LowerFilters and UpperFilters are displayed in the right pane. Press Tab to highlight the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

in the left pane, and use File | Export... to produce a file (say filter.reg), which can be posted. Actually we only need two lines from this file that start with "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters", and their values are given in hex in this file, so it may be more convenient to write down and post the values you see in the registry.

Thanks for the additional info on the Canon software. It is really strange why such software should affect CD burning in colonwk's case.

Congratulations, you did find it!

MusicMatch's driver MxLW2k.sys appears both in LowerFilters and Driver Information. BTW, other sources confirm that MxLW2k goes into LowerFilters under XP, but some older Microsoft documentation says MxLW2k goes into UpperFilters under W2K.

Well, since you have no InCD problems, MxLW2k is apparently harmless under XP, at least in your case. That's good news.

To save space, you may now edit your post to remove Drive ... Software Information in the initial part, and from Driver: msvcrt.dll till the end.

KCK,

I guess we were both posting simultaneously. Anyway, here is that exported regedit search for "lowerfilters":

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Hey, that hex is a real nightmare. Thirty years ago I had to learn octal in order to read CDC 6400 core dumps. That was enough! No hex for me, ever, never, no way!

Your latest registry post confirmed the previous one with LowerFilters being bsstor and MxlW2k, as can be seen from the ASCII tables in http://www.asciitable.com (good name!) and http://www.jimprice.com/jim-asc.htm (quite neat). And in fact it is not just ASCII, since Microsoft now wants you to learn Unicode to read .reg files!

BTW, except for LowerFilters, your .reg file is identical to what I get on my XP Pro SP1 box; thus again you may delete the final four sections.

KCK wrote:And in fact it is not just ASCII, since Microsoft now wants you to learn Unicode to read .reg files!

If you use regedt32.exe instead of regedit.exe, you can save the key via the command "Registry"->"Save Subkey As..." and Microsoft will do the unicode translation for you:

Code: Select all
Value 6
  Name:            LowerFilters
  Type:            REG_MULTI_SZ
  Data:            bsstor
                   MxlW2k

All system text values in NT, 2000 and XP are stored internally as unicode. The LowerFilters were written using hex format in the Cowboy Slim's regedit output because the value is a REG_MULTI_SZ named value (as opposed to a simple REG_SZ named vale), not because it is specifically unicode.

Regedit32 lets you do a few things that regedit won't allow you to do, including setting security permissions on keys and entering and editing REG_MULTI_SZ named values. Still, I usually stick with regedit for most work because I think it has a better, easier to use interface.

CowboySlim and I use XP (not W2K). According to MS, at least on XP Pro, Regedit.exe combines the features of W2K's Regedit.exe and Regedt32.exe. It does allow me to edit LowerFilters, but I can't find any option to "Save Subkey As...".

BTW, since Unicode has been mentioned, does anybody know of a simple utility for converting text files from Unicode to ASCII? Notepad is quite inconvenient.

Well, if you can find a copy of regedt32.exe, it will probably run on XP as well. But if you can already set permissions, edit REG_MULTI_SZ, etc. with XP's regedit.exe, it may not be worth looking.

You can set the encoding in notepad when you "Save As". So open the file in notepad, then "Save As" with ANSI encoding.

I should have written: GUI utilities, such as Notepad, are quite inconvenient (need too many clicks). What I'm looking for is a small DOS/Unix style filter, say uni2asci, which works in a cmd windows, e.g., "uni2asci <unicode.txt >ascii.txt". Some time ago I tried a GNU utility, but it didn't work on my XP box.

Sorry, I misunderstood. A quick and dirty way to do it is to redirect the output of the TYPE command:

Yes, thank you! :D I didn't try "type" before, assuming that MS converted everything to Unicode (since MS-DOS has officially disappeared from XP). That will be enough until I find a proper filter.
