Canon i850 or Canon i950 Printer

Okay, I am trying to assist my friend with choosing a printer, the final candidates are Canon i850 (USB / Parallel) and Canon i950 (USB).

In terms of interfaces, the Canon i850 offers both USB 2 and Parallel and the Canon i950 offers USB 2?.

I haven't been a fan of Epson or Hewlett Packard for several reasons (warranty, tri-color cartridges, etc...). Although I never had any problems with Hewlett Packard historically.

I am recommending the Canon i850 due to the dual interface being available and a larger buffer. I am also recommending Canon due to individual color tanks.

Which interface is better Parallel or USB 2 is my question?

My friend is not the most technical, but I suspect USB will be easier to hook up and configure.

Does anyone have any experience with these printers? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you guys!

I have the i850 and am quite pleased with it. Unless your friend is heavily into photography, the i850 is sufficient for everyday, snapshot, point and shoot, good color photos. If you are into art photography as a serious hobby, spend the extra $75 - $100 for the i950. If your friend has an old computer without USB capability, avoid the i950.

Good Luck,
Slim

I got i850 & can recommend it ! Very nice pics & great software/price 8)

It is NOT usb2 tho - just usb1.1 ! It is also not a big deal, usb2 is more important for scanners & digicam.card readers

I also have the i850 (2 months) and am happy with it. CowboySlim has good advice for chosing. USB is faster than parallel- I have both ports in use (2 different rigs) and that works fine. Careful with USB2: USB2 full speed is just USB 1.1. Canon is a major sinner on this front!!! (printer is fine though).

MediumRare - Thank you for your additional feedback and USB "warning"! :)

I'm glad to hear that those who have replied and own the Canon i850 are happy with it!

Chances are I may go with recommending the Canon i850.

Thanks, Eliminator,

You see, I didn't have one until a few weeks ago; no real need for one, of course. But then Staples had this Memorex 600 x 1200 dpi scanner for $15, AMIR of $60. So I got it, of course. It's OK, I kinda' like it, but I know yours is much better, of course. My wife likes the idea that I can make passable color copies and she won't have to go to Kinkos for 75 cents per and I can FAX now.

But there is one reality of life: Today's luxuries are tomorrow's neccessities, or, yesterday's luxuries are today's...............

So I'm sure that I'll be upgrading as soon as my daughter can find room for this one, of course. :P
