I am looking at a new PCI graphics card with 64mb, i have seen the geforce 4 mx440 and a geforce 2 and others, which would be the best one to get a geforce or ATI.

my system specs are
Celeron 766Mhz(might be upgrading soon)
192Mb (upgrading soon to 512Mb)
window me
will my system be able to handle a geforce 4 or equivelant.

Few questions over here. When you upgrade that celeron are you planning to go Intel's way or AMD? if you plan to upgrade with an Athlon XP then you could find and nforce2 motherboard with that graphic card integrated. You shouldn't expect much from that card so I suppose you are not a hardcore gamer. If you have to upgrade now and can't wait till you upgrade your motherboard then I'll recommend an Ati 8500le(250/250)($54-$100) or a cheap Nvidia Ti4200 over the mx440. If you are buying this card for gamming then you should consider an Ati Radeon 9500($100-$200) or a Nvidia FX 5600($100-$200).

Most of those cards are AGP not PCI, it is very problably that when you uprgrade that celeron your new motherboard will have an AGP slot, don't know if you already have it.

im upgrading this computer to the max and i will biuld another computer later,it hasnt got a AGP port so i will need to use a 64mb card,

Welll look if you find a Geforce 3 without the MX, I also have seen some Nvidia FX 5200 PCI Bus, that would be much better. If you can't find any of these stay with the geforce 4 mx440.

Nice poll, I also like more Ati than Nvidia although both use dirty marketing techniques but what can I do. What is the price of the card? you should look for a high memory clock, high engine or chip clock, don't know if you want tv-out or dvi, good reviews and a good bundle. That one seems to be good but no info about the DDR RAM. Like I said before, don't expect too much out of that card.

If you must get an nvidia card for a PCI slot, look at one based on the FX series.

Honestly, my strongest recommendation would be to get a motherborad with an AGP slot if you really want to game. A weak AGP card will perform better than a low-to-mid range PCI card, regardless of brand.

I havent really got enough money to buy a new motherboard at the moment.
Alli want is a better card than my original card, intel 82810e which is not really good plus it only has 32mb, 64mb is allright for me at the moment anyway.

the games i am going to play are a jedi outcast,GTA 3, GTA vicecity,racing games,quake 3,etc etc
all these games work on my 32mb graphics card but the framerate is poor
on some and textures are a crap but they are still playeble, thats why i think a 64mb graphics card should performe alot better than the intel intergrated graphics card.

You will see an improvement only because intel's integrated cards suck, but don't expect too much. PCI doesn't provide too much memory bandwigth for video cards, also the mx series is the cheap oriented cards don't expect something out of this world and that celeron doesn't help much. I understand you and this isn't to discourage you but if I were you I would save that money and buy a decent card with the mobo and the other stuff you plan to buy later. But if you can't wait then buy the geforce4 mx440. I browsed the site and there's not too much to choose from, the price is about $73.07US = $112AUS which I find a little high; look if you can find something cheaper on another site or retail store. Plus it doesn't says what accessories it's bundled with like a S-Video calbe, S-Video to RCA convertor, Games, DVD Software nothing. Hope you end up with something that you like, good luck!

ive browsed alot of sites around the area i live and theirs not much to choose or the prices are to high.
i dont think thiers is much bundled with the albatron and the price is high, i will probaly wait a little till thiers something cheaper or better.

Actually I don't think their is an Ati equivalent for the Geforce 4 mx440SE. The Radeon 7500 is below in performance of the Geforce, the other one is the Radeon 8500 which is much better than the Geforce 4 mx but I haven't seen it for PCI slots. The other cards the Radeon 9000 I find to be of lower quality than the 8500 and the 9100 = 8500, they just changed the name of the card. I think I have seen some 9000 PCI out there but don't how it performs compared to the Geforce 4 mx.

It would be better if the memory clock was syncronized with core clock 250/200 --> 250/250. From the reviews I have seen the Radeon 9000 and geforce 4 mx440 are more or less the same. Theres a Radeon 9000 Pro which is better than the mx440. Here are some links that will help you make your decision:

i looked at the articles and the ATI Radeon 9000 beats the geforce 4 in every game but not by much, but i am still sticking with ATI.
The geforce series seem to be cheaper than ATI around were i live.
maybe i can get a cheap bargain online at ebay or something.

Also shop for the 9000 Pro, see if you can find one for PCI.

No, ATI drivers are (almost) as good as nVidia drivers these days.
