The PSU's that come with cases tend to be bad, unless they are Antec, Thermaltake, etc.

I would not recomend a 350MHZ PSU for a P4 2.4C. I would recomend a 430W Antec True Power PSU if you plan on using other components, like dvd burners, high end video/sound cards, and lots of fans.

I agree with AW. You won't get much PSU for $18 including case. Buy the Antec fan and throw the first PSU away.

OTH, you won't get much case for $18 including PSU. Then, buy a 10 bay Antec case with out PSU and throw the first case away.

Outside of that, you've got a great bargain. :o

cheap case

There is nothing wrong with a cheap case. Now the PSU I have to agree. I have had many problems solved simply by going to the largest PSU Antec makes the True Control 550 Watt .I wouldn't see anything wrong with getting the $18 case and then buying a true power for around 50 bux and you'd have a nice stable system and it wouldnt cost as much as the expensive cases with the PS included. You arent planning on standing on the case though are you? :)

I've got the 430 TruePower. It's probably the last PSU I'll have to get.

Then I see the 550 TruePower. Arrghhh!

A PSU is an area not to skimp on. It's an investment that will affect the rest of your system.

If you need to buy a case, then Antec does make cases with TruePower PSU's or just regular ones.

The combo is far cheaper than buying both separately..... at least up here in Canada.

I think Enermax does the same thing.

I have a 400W Antec in one case, and an Antec 350W True Power in the other.
The PSU and cooling in a PC are critical for stability.
Cheap PSUs may work, but they can be unreliable and fail prematurely,
as well as lead to instability.

As aviationwiz said, the more components you have the more wattage you'll need.

The above power supplies are working with two AMD PCs (1.2 GHZ Thundebird and an XP 2600+ 2.1 GHZ) that have
two hard drives each and five optical drives each, without any problems.

The True Power is equivalent to average PSUs that are rated substantially higher.

I have the PC Power and Cooling Turbo-Cool 475 ATX (PFC) power supply. It's expensive ($215 US + shipping) but it is worth every penny - its rock solid and stable (5-year warranty). They have since come out with a 510W power supply and recently with the 510W Deluxe. (Might get it next year for my 2nd pc case.) I have only read a handfull of reviews on them but every review gives them top marks (9/10 out of 10), some reviewers have said they are THE BEST power supply period. If you the money, I recommend you get one.

Problem is, I'm on a budget, this question was actually for my friend who wants to build a computer, He gave me $900 limit for everything (monitor, windows XP home), but i want him to get a really good setup.

What are the good PSU brands, (Antec is a bit high in price on Newegg)
for a P4 Hyperthreading PC with A 16x LiteOn DVD Rom, a 52x Lite On burner, a GeForce FX5200 (might upgrade later), 120GB 7200 RPM 8mb hdd or 2. Floppy burner, 512 PC3000 DDR.
(he doesnt want a dvd burner yet)

I know that most people are not fans of combo drives, but how about a LiteON 48/24/48/16 instead of the 2 separate optical drives?

It should save a few bucks anyways that you could use for a quality PSU.

What's a floppy burner? You're not talking about the LS-120 drive are you?

After a few years of changing power supplys out I'd say it would be worth it to spend the other 25 dollars for the Antec.Although I have heard Allied isnt a bad PS.
