P4C Temp/Fan Question..

Hi all, just got a Pentium 4C 2.4GHz. This thing runs ~55C under load, which seems kinda high. Is it? What's a good "safe" temp? I do want to OC a soon as I get my new memory.

I am using the stock heatsink/fan...which had a thermal pad on it instead of paste. Before overclocking, I was going to remove the thermal pad and put some Artic Silver 2 on it. Or should I just get a whole new heatsink/fan? What would a good (quiet!) one be? The local store carries Cooler Masters, I think...

Also, does anyone know if the MSI 865PE Neo2 boards "lock" the memory speed if the FSB is OC'd? Right now I don't want to OC because I have old, PC2100 (266MHz) memory in the system, which didn't seem very tolerant of OC'ing in my old system. I plan on replacing it with Kingston HyperX 500MHz DDR, which, if the FSB is OC'd, would give me 1GHz Memory and a 3GHz CPU, with the memory still running "in spec".

Thoughs? Other than that I tend to ramble in my posts?

Burnin,

Can you tell what's the usual ambient temp where your pc is? I think maybe 55C is little too high. Others might opine differently but around 45C is normal right?

Also while it's at 55C OC is not a good move. Maybe already you are aware, Temp is the OC killer.

That does seem kind of high. Dumb question, but is it hot in the room, with or without the computer on?

Also, I would recomend a Thermaltake HSF used on slow fan level.

Here is a site from where you can get loads of info on Heat Sinks/coolers:

Dan really runs a good site.

System temp at idle is 38C, with idle CPU temp at ~44C or less.
It's not that hot in the actual room.
Maybe it's because the fan has the stupid thermal pad on it? I'll be ordering a new fan ASAP...

Well, guess I won't even be doing a 1MHz overclock

The stupid mobo can't lock the PCI/AGP bus speeds! And this from a board that MSI tries to pimp to overclockers; it even has a big "D.O.T." sticker on it. Argh! Even my old, 1st gen Abit 845 mobo could lock the PCI/AGP bus.

Well, guess I'll be getting that nice Gigabyte 875 P4 Titan board...
