I ordered a Dell notebook model-named Inspiron 8600. It has an Intel Centrino 1.6GHz processor with 1MB L2 cache memory, 40GB 2.5-inch hard disk drive, 24x CD-ROM drive, 15.4-inch LCD monitor with up to 1920x1200 resolution, 9-cell battery, etc. The price tag is about 1.9 million Korean Won, excluding VAT.

This is my fifth notebook I buy this year but it will arrive in early January 2004 from Dell's Malaysia lines. Though I have bought four notebooks this year, only one is for my own use, the second notebook is for my wife, the third for my younger brother, and the fourth for a friend who helps me in a lot of things on a voluntary basis. The Dell I will use for watching HDTV and browsing web because of its 1920x1200 resolution. This PC right now I'm using has just 1024x768, made by NEC in Japan, powered by Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz processor. Nearly three times difference.

Big thanks to everyone who helped create this ultra-high resolution LCD panels for notebook computers. The quality cannot match that of the latest 23-inch and 24-inch LCD monotors from LG and Samsung - a lot more expensive - but I hope I'll be satified for some time.

Hm... even my 1.8GHz P4 runs just two hours. 3.2GHz P4 requires too massive a battery to last two hours.

The same unit costs just under $1300 from Dell USA. I guess one can get such a machine for around US$1K from eBay.

My HP ze4401us with an Athlon XP 2200+ runs for 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the usage.

Is that when connected to an external monitor or the native resolution of the LCD? If it's the LCD, that is NICE! I bought a laptop almost a year ago to the day, and I had a hell of a time finding one with a 15" screen that did 1600x1200 natively. I ended up paying quite a bit for it, but I have never regretted it. Congratulations on the new laptop.

when you said 1.9 MILLION! i was like wooo that be crazy if the value of an american dollar was written to be up to that high.. anyways found out it was only worth about 1600 american. glad you are happy

You know well an Athlon XP 2200+ does not actually run at 2200MHz clock. Some notebooks just use Pentium 4 processors intended for desktops running at 2.8GHz and over. They usually weigh around 3 to 4 kilograms, including battery.

I think Intel's Centrino is a nice compromise of power and battery usage time. At 1.6GHz, I hope, this Dell will let me watch two DVD movies without recharging.

Native LCD. I bought a Toshiba Satellite in 2003 April, up to 1400x1050 resolution. I wish I bought one with 1600x1200 instead then. Too much difference.

That's correct. One USD is about one thousand and two hundred South Korean Won (or KRW) these days.

I haven't yet received the machine. New Year's Day holiday just ended several hours ago. Dell Korea'll send it today.

The first thing I'll do with the notebook will be to add a 256MB DDR notebook module making 512MB total. I'll probably link a lot of high-res pictures made easier by the 1920x1200 screen.

On Dec. 31, I was with 10 friends at a Pizza Hut in downtown Seoul near the South Korean congress building. One of the guys brought a Compaq with 15.4-inch LCD, wide screen with him. It looked very nice, so much better than my NEC Versa P440. As I spend more time and money on DVD and HDTV, wide (16:9 to 16:10 at least) seems more appropriate.
