Problem With External HD Enclosure

I recently purchased an RX32 external hard drive enclosure with USB 2.0. I put a 40 GB Maxtor hard drive in it (that had been previously installed in my computer, until I got a new larger drive to go inside). I then followed the included instructions to hook it up to my Windows XP Pro computer. A little balloon came up stating that it had found new hardware, and then it changed to say that it had recognized it as a USB Mass Storage Device. About 10 seconds later, it said that the installation of the new hardware had failed. Now, every time I try to plug it in again, the Windows XP sound plays (the one that always plays when something is inserted), and less than a second later it plays the standard "unplug/remove" sound. So it recognizes something, but it still doesn't work. What else should I try?

Did you plug your external drive in? 3.5'' desktop HDDs cannot run off USB power alone, if it doesn't have an external power source then that is why it is disconnecting...
