I currently have Amd 2500+ barton core . I'm thinking of going to a Amd64 3000+ venice core. Would I be looking at a performance boost? I know there might be better options out there ,but I'm trying to keep cost down. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have the same Barton and a 3400 Clawhammer (754) . For me, gaming appears to be a wash as far as performance goes. The real gain that I noticed is with video editing, running DVD Shrink etc.. Roughly a 30% performance gain over the overclocked Barton with the Clawhammer at stock speed. Any programs that are cpu intensive should speed up a considerable amount.

BTW- I believe AMD just had a price drop so prices should begin falling if they haven't already.

Thanks for the reply. I have noticed that most 754 socket motherboards don't support dual channel memory, but socket 939 does . Does dual channel make a big difference in performance? by the way I mostly use the computer for light gaming and lots of dvd burning .

I hadn't read much on the subject since last fall when I put together the clawhammer rig. Back then there was about a 5% performance gain in real world apps, sometimes less. As best as I can tell after doing a little reading today, that's still true today... Hopefully someone else will correct me if I'm wrong.

I would definitely go for a 939 socket today because of potential developments for that socket. When I bought the clawhammer nine months ago it was the better deal with the 1meg cache.

I think you will find these helpful. Look at the benches vs. common apps.

Once again thanks for the reply . I'm going with the 939 socket rig . Like you mentioned it seems to have more potential.

ever think about overclocking the hell out of that barton? I have pushed the 2500s to 2706 actual mhz. You oughta see performance at those speeds but thats with water cooling. On air I have ran them at 2424 mhz no problems whatsoever. Very quick at that speed as well. I own 3 barton core cpus 2 2500 and 1 2600. the 2600 is a mobile barton thats whats in this computer now thats runnning at 2706 rock solid stable.

Actually I have my barton 2500+ overclocked just a bit, it's running at 2.0 right now. Just before getting to 2.2 I start having issues with graphics. Even though I'm not into intense gaming. I wanted to go and upgrade to a new socket such as the 939 due to more options. I won't be getting rid of my 2500+ , I could always use a 3rd computer. :D

Agent Orange,

Ewiz has a 3000 oem for $120 shipped. It's the model ADA3000DAA4BW.. Not sure what changed with the BW revision but you might want to check it out.
