Intel Pentium D 830 non stock cooler?

Does anyone have recommendation for an Intel Pentium D 830 non stock cooler :?:

The stock cooler at approximately 4000RPM is noisy, At load, it is no less than 60 degrees celsius. Can't exactly boil water at that temperature!

Perhaps it's also the 4 case fans (3 x ADDA Model AD0812LB-A70GL, 1 x Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 2, A1357)

I have been looking at Thermaltake SonicTower, but not certain if that is what I want.

Thanks in advance for any help with this! Cheers! :)

I had the same problem, the thing can cook an egg with stock cooling.

I got a Thermalright XP90 (not the "c" version, wasn't worth a 50% price premium for 1-2C more) and a Panaflow 92mm fan, with Arctic Silver 5. Much quieter than the stock 'buzzy' cooler, even though I leave it running at full speed- 2800RPM.. Works great; temps went from 75C under full load to 59C [2 instances of Folding at Home running for 2-3 hours). (Idle temps are around 38C, when the mobo temp reads 33C) [I know you said you were hitting 60C load and complaining, but I would imagine you'd get relatively cooler]

I'm quite happy with it. I'm not overclocking or anything so it keeps it well within the comfort range, and was much easier to install than anything I read implied it would be, besides having to take out the mobo. (the instructions say to clip the back clips first, then 'swivel' it into place. I keep reading reviews complaining about how hard you have to push the clips and I can only imagine they aren't doing it the way they were supposed to)

Justin42 - Cheers for the reply! :)

My CPU idle temperature is between 48 to 52 degrees celsius. I should be somewhat happy, but I guess I'm just trying to see if I can do better. I currently have a Lian Li PC61 case, but planning to switch over to an Antec P180 case.

I had a look at Cooler Master's Hyper 6+, but it seems to be on the "heavy" side.

I was looking at the Thermalright XP90. The cost difference between the XP90 and the XP90C cannot be justified for the minimal difference. Not to mention, the XP90C is double the weight. It seems that the XP90 is one of the lightest heatsinks out there, I really like to avoid a "bent" motherboard. Thanks, I may take this route.

Are you using the default thermal compound that comes with the XP90 or are you using AS5/another thermal compound?

if you have the room around your processor area, its very hard to beat one of these:

http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/vie ... 5&code=009

my 3200 winchester core runs 87F (31C) idle and 94F loaded

The XP90 is REALLY light. Even with the fan it's lighter than the stock Intel heatsink.. it really is surprising when you see it. (that was another reason I went for it over the 90c, I was a bit concerned about putting too much pressure on the mobo although I'm sure it's fine)

I used AS5, mainly because I already had a tube (I bought some to re-attach the Intel heatsink to see if it would help at all). The stuff that comes with the XP90 is supposedly fairly good, but for like $6-$10 more AS5 is a good investment.

Hoxlund-- you're cheating using a processor that doesn't rival the sun for surface temperature. ;)

as usual i won't be using the motherboard, so if someone wants it, also the windows xp i also won't use

both are up for sale

I kinda dread the weight of the Intel stock HSF when I first opened the box to install the Pentium D 830.

I have been Googling for reviews of CPU coolers most of the day and just ran into Scythe Katana at 300g. :o

http://www.scythe-eu.com/usa/katana.php

Below was a review of Katana at Insanetek:
http://www.insanetek.com/index.php?page=scythekatana_1

The Thermalright XP90 heatsink alone weighs in at 360g, fairly light too. Please correct me if I'm wrong here, if one goes with the Thermalright, one has to buy the retention mechanism for LGA-775 on top of a 92mm fan for the XP90? I have read good reviews about the XP90 and is a candidate on my list.

I was not crazy about oversized heatsinks due to their weight. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-81955X Royal. Guess I can toss out the U-Plus DPS (Universal Plus Dual Power System).

I will be ordering some AS5, I think a 12g tube should be more than enough :?:

So far the candidates are:
Thermalright XP90
Scythe Katana SCKTN-1000

I have eliminated Cooler Master's Hyper 6+, Thermalright XP120, and Thermaltake SonicTower from the shopping list.

Guess shopping and trying to make a sound decision is not an easy one here.

@hoxlund - I think it has been a very long time since I had a CPU at the temperature you provided! I will give AMD credit for keeping the heat to a "minimal".

i really don't like those tower coolers, to big if you ask me

its distracting to the eye if you were to look into a case like mine

@hoxlund - if I may ask the following: what case do you have? what was the selling point that convinced you to buy the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu?

I was over at the forums of Anandtech. No disrespect to anyone there, but some of those guys are just "mad" if you ask me.

Yeah, you need the LGA775RM module for it to work-- here's the Newegg link so you know what you're looking for (gotta love a $5 product costing $5 to ship-- it weighs all of like 3 ounces):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835999351

The Katana looks interesting. Since he compares it to the Arctic Freezer 7 (and it is fairly close) you should look at the big roundups that have reviews of multiple units and see how the XP90 does vs. the AF7. I'm not sure how it would fit on the Gigabyte, though (although I doubt you could use the U-Plus DPS with EITHER the XP90 or Katana.. I originally had a Gigabyte i955X but it came DOA, so I switched to Asus, so I remember the layout a bit). It looks like a tighter fit than the XP90 but I can't really tell (plus every mobo is slightly different)

I've heard-- you would probably want to confirm this-- the XP90s are better than the Zalmans. I went with an XP90 over a Zalman due to the weight and my impression the XP90 was a slightly better cooler. (although I had to research and buy fast as my computer was in a million pieces and I couldn't cool it for anything and needed to use it)

@Justin42 - Cheers for the confirmation and feedback! :)

IMO, 59 degrees celsius under load is pretty good, which 92mm fan are you using? I presume the recommended Panaflo. What case do you have?

If I get the XP90, it'll probably be:
http://www.bestbyteinc.com/prodinfo.asp ... K-TRI-X9RT
http://www.bestbyteinc.com/prodinfo.asp ... -TRI-RM775
Total $41.00 before shipping.

If I get the Sychte Kitana, it'll probably be:
http://www.bestbyteinc.com/prodinfo.asp ... SK-SCY-KTN
Total $32.95 before shipping.

I am a little concern about the weight of a Zalman at the moment.

I have a little time, my computer is in pieces at the moment, since my Antec P180 got damaged in shipping. I figured this downtime was the perfect opportunity to research into a new heatsink fan for the Pentium D 830.

i went with the zalman because it offers the best air cooling

Thanks all for the feedback! After reading the review at Insanetek and the specifications (size, weight) to Scythe Katana, I have optioned for this cooler. If the Katana fails to impress, I'm falling back to the XP90.

@hoxlund - that is quite a case there!

80 degrees F idle

Just an update, more like a diary entry!

My replacement Antec P180 arrived this afternoon, the original one was damaged during shipping about 2 weeks ago. I spent the last couple of hours getting my primary PC up and running again.

The three (3) base (Antec Tricool) 120mm fans that arrived with the Antec P180 is running at high.

Installed a 4th 120mm fan in the upper hdd cage. Even the current configuration is quieter than my old config with 4 80 mm fan in a Lian Li PC61 aluminum case.

Currently running Pentium D 830 using Scythe Katana CPU cooler with AS5. No more Intel stock cooler running at near 4,000 RPM. The CPU with Scythe Katana at idle is running near 13-18 degrees Celsius cooler. Of course, the change in the case also factors into the equation.

At times, the temp at idle even hit 36 degrees Celsius.

My current room temperature is fairly warm and has no air conditioning, my thermostat on the first floor reads 79 degrees Farenheit at the moment.

Justin42 - I was able to "squeeze" in the U-DPS card right next to the Scythe Katana on the Gigabyte GA8I955X Royal. You know the feeling of being in a tight parking spot.

lightningbaron:

why did you add another fan?
what kind of fan is it?
how did you set up the P180? location of HDs etc.
what motherboard and PSU do you use?

i should be getting my replacement P180 in a couple of days.

dodecahedron - see my response in blue text.

why did you add another fan?
The 120mm fan is used to intake air from the front with door open or vents from the front and to directly cool the hard drives. With the P180, you have a lower HDD cage and an upper HDD cage. The upper HDD cage allows an additional 120mm fan.

what kind of fan is it?
I optioned to use an Antec Pro Series 120mm case fan with double ball-bearing.

what motherboard and PSU do you use?
Motherboard is Gigabyte GA81955X Royal with Pentium D 830 (Scythe Katana CPU cooler) and power supply is Antec NeoPower 480.

how did you set up the P180? location of HDs etc.
I optioned to use the upper HDD cage as that has an optional 120mm fan bracket directly in front of it. I routed some cable behind the upper HDD cage to "hide" to hide part of the cable mess. If there is specific you want to know about how I setup the P180, please post your question and I'll try to answer.

I must say that I am happy with the Antec P180 thus far in terms of noise level and temperatures.

Good luck with your replacement P180.

You can view the below thread from anantech.com:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview ... erthread=y

The starter of the thread did a clean job with his cables, but took out the 120mmx38mm case fan from the lower chamber in front of the power supply.

Edit #1:

Below is my current configuration

whew 98F

i hate running a processor that hot

im glad i opted for this very expensive 7x120mm case, 4x80mm case

make that 8x120mm if you include the processor heatsink

and its still quieter then any computer ive ever had

first video card runs at 47C, second one at 44C

EasyTune5 Temp (10/1/2005)

Looks like Scythe Katana CPU cooler and AS5 doing the job quite well on the Pentium D 830.

you have succesfully used the secret to air cooling

120mm fans, there quieter then 80 and blow more air

my secret weapon

not bad temps for a dual core 3.0GHz

p.s. intel is having a free movie training session the day before the intel employee bundle release

wish me luck in winning a dual core processor (820) and mobo combo

they usually give away quite a few, then the next day you can buy that proc. mobo bundle for $275

anyone wanna buy it?

hoxlund - Good luck with the Intel giveaway.

I have to say that I have learned quite a bit between this forum, cdfreaks.com and AT (AnandTech) forum.

If it wasn't for insanetek.com, I wouldn't have learned about the existence of the Scythe Katana CPU cooler.

I never had a case that supported 120mm case fans until the Antec P180. Evidently, they are very effective at pushing air at a much lower RPM and are quieter at the same time.

Well, maybe my next goal is to keep reducing the idle temperature and learn better cable management. I'm only within 5 degress Celsius of your idle temperature.

for really good cable management go for a modular power supply
