Ok I have a cheap PC CHIPS 811 motherboard and the bios just won't keep time, it keeps setting itself back to 2002 and then when I boot up to windows xp and as soon as I get to desktop, my computer freezes and goes to a blue screen saying something about memory error check sum but I never get enough time to read as it reboots itself rather quickly. No matter how many times I try to set the right date and time on the bios, it keeps resetting itself back to 2002. what could it be? thanks

i looked at the motherboard and i saw something that looks like a bigger version of a watch battery. is that the cmos battery? and can i replace it with any cmos battery at local computer store or do i need a specific type for that motherboard?

the exact model battery is written in the manual.
and on the battery itself.

Even if the clock/CMOS battery is bad, the memory checksum error sounds like a separate issue. Try swapping out the RAM in your system, or if you have more than one memory module, running only one at a time (booting up once with each) to see if the error goes away, and also create a Memtest86 boot disk (do a Google for memtest86) and test all your memory.

As you said in your opening post, PC Chips mainboards are cheap: both in price and in quality. With this in mind, their capacitors likely come from a pretty low bidder. Unless you have other equally cheap parts in your system, if the RAM tests pass the mainboard would be high on my suspect list of parts.

thanks for all your help: the CMOS BATTERY was bad and the MEMORY wasn't compatible. i bought a new battery and KINGSTON memory and now my problems are over. the dates stay the same and no more computer freezing and no more new blue screen error message. thanks
